The Gothic 1 remake is exactly what fans were hoping for: a technical overhaul that never loses its gritty character. I had an absolute blast playing this brutal game. It requires patience—you have to save often, proceed with caution, and rely on tactics to get through it—but the reward is a wonderful role-playing experience.

I am happy to state that Gothic 1 Remake is a great game, and one that impressed me more than I was expecting. Having played the Remake’s demo, I was skeptical about this game being a true remake of the original. But it is, and a great remake at that.

Gothic Remake faithfully preserves what made the original a genre-defining RPG. Its gradual character progression, rewarding role-playing systems, and immersive NPC routines still feel remarkably ahead of their time. Rather than reinventing the formula, the remake strengthens the legacy of a game that remains one of the finest examples of classic RPG design, even by today's standards.

They've succeeded in helping a new generation of players understand why Gothic remains a benchmark within the genre.

Could Gothic Remake be better? Of course. Fortunately, it turned out to be just good enough and I genuinely hope to see a remake of the next installment as well, because the developers at Alkimia Interactive have convinced me that they’re up to the task. By the time you’re listening to this review, I’m probably already playing through it again, this time joining a different camp. So all that’s left for me to do is recommend a visit to the Valley of Mines, more beautiful than ever before.

However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.

Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

The Gothic hero is back in decent form. It boasts modern graphics and offers a compelling story and precise character development. However, the progression is slow and demanding, which can be frustrating in the first few hours.

To its great credit, Gothic 1 Remake does not try to smooth out the challenge or design approach of the 2001 original, choosing instead to make significant graphical upgrades and add layers of improvement to combat and other mechanics.

Furthermore, the developers' excessive effort to remain faithful to certain aspects of the classic version has caused not only the positives but also the negatives—sometimes in even greater doses—to carry over into the remake, occasionally leaving an unpleasant impression on the player. This title may offer a modern-graphics experience of Gothic 1, but as a "remake," it fails to shine particularly brightly.

For the hardcore fans of the franchise that just wanted a 1:1 remake of the original without anything added or removed, Gothic Remake is a dream come true. But even the avid Gothic fans are not safe from the performance horrors caused by the Unreal Engine 5, and that makes the Gothic Remake not everybody's cup of tea.

Unlike the original, the remake offers three different difficulty levels and a glossary where you can find out where previously discovered NPCs are located and what they offer – nevertheless, the experience is still uncomfortable and unforgiving for long stretches.
