I am happy to state that Gothic 1 Remake is a great game, and one that impressed me more than I was expecting. Having played the Remake’s demo, I was skeptical about this game being a true remake of the original. But it is, and a great remake at that.

So all that’s left for me to do is recommend a visit to the Valley of Mines, more beautiful than ever before.

I am happy to announce that I am a new fan! I was willing to adapt to what the developers wanted me to experience, and even to the hours I lost due to bugs. Gothic is an open-world action RPG that I want to recommend to everyone without an asterisk. It’s a fantastic and beautiful world, filled with challenging enemies, engaging gameplay, and a sense of wonder I haven’t felt in a long time. However, playing on console was less than ideal, and in my opinion, it should’ve been released only on PC as a timed exclusive so that a proper console version could be released later. I feel like I’m saying this too often lately, but this game is a must-play for fans of this genre. Just wait a bit until it’s been ironed out.

Whilst I do appreciate how heavily this game focuses on NPC interaction, and its importance in forming alliances, Gothic fails to make me care about any of these Old Camp Shadow thugs, Brotherhood of the Sleeper cultists, or New Camp Mercenaries. Diego is the only character that even comes close to being likeable. Gothic 1 Remake’s biggest achievement is to truly deliver that vintage gameplay experience to players. If you’re a big fan of old-school game design, minimal guidance, and unforgiving difficulty, then this game is for you. For players who have grown accustomed to modern quality of life features like fast travel and auto-saves, Gothic 1 Remake can feel rather frustrating. One of my personal pet peeves was the trainer-based progression system. I had to track down one of the many NPCs who can train me to level up a certain skill. Yes, I know I sound like I didn’t enjoy the game. On the contrary, it brought me back to my childhood, when games didn’t have guides, floating arrows pointing where you had to go next, or glowing objects that stood out so you knew which ones you could interact with. If you’re looking for that old-school feel, Gothic 1 Remake will not disappoint. Gothic 1 Remake gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Alkimia Interactive has performed a veritable philological miracle in terms of atmosphere, demonstrating immense courage in its determination to preserve at all costs that ruthless ecosystem and that sense of isolation and total immersion that made Piranha Bytes’ original work so successful. The title’s main problem, however, does not lie solely in a technical implementation that drags too much baggage along with it—including unstable frame rates, crippling tearing, sudden freezes, and bugs that risk compromising the gameplay experience and progression. The real knot to untie lies, in reality, within each of us. Gothic 1 Remake acts as a mirror that forces us to come to terms with our own evolution as gamers. And, in a broader sense, as human beings. It is a work we cannot help but love for its moving conceptual integrity. Yet at the same time, we struggle to digest it because of that very structural slowness and ruthlessness that clash violently with the syncopated rhythms of our lives. For those who still have a deep desire—and, above all, the “luxury of time”—to be able to “slow down,” the Valley of Mines offers one of the most visceral, authentic, and rewarding adventures of recent years. For everyone else, the encounter with this glorious, rugged, and uncompromising relic of the past may prove difficult to handle.
