They Are Billions offers an almost perfect gameplay loop, mixing tower-defence with city building and exploration, as you balance resource-management, defence and offense, all against your ever-impending doom at the hands of a world infested with the undead. The only downside to a game that looks and sounds great, offering a tense experience in a compelling setting, is a campaign that doesn't fully make-use of the gameplay loop perfected by Numantian Games, leaving the campaign feeling weak, compared to the survival mode, which is the real draw.

They Are Billions is a game based on just a single trick that’s up its undead sleeve. But it’s a hell of a trick, one that’ll keep you ensnared in its tangled web of survival for dozens and dozens of hours as the undead march upon your best base-building efforts.

Overall, They Are Billions is an absolutely solid pick up and a real steal for its price point. It has a great aesthetic, solid gameplay, and a difficulty curve that is as impressive as it is aggravating. The only real drawback that I found was the PC ported controls that aren’t exactly designed to make PS4 gaming a breeze. If you want to test your steampunk mettle against an almost endless hoard of the undead, They Are Billions scratches that base building itch as well letting you live out your fantasies of fighting zombies. As long as you’re really, really, good at both, you’ll have no trouble with this one! Even if you’re not, this is one that is well worth the time and punishment.

Strictly speaking about the game, I enjoyed the atmosphere quite a lot, and the unique blend of medieval, steampunk and modern elements made the game seem quite unique. The zombie waves and the gameplay in general are extremely engaging, and combat can keep you on the edge of your seat at times, especially when you underestimate enemy forces. All in all, They are Billions is a game that definitely deserves praise, but playing it with anything other than a mouse and keyboard can be literally gamer’s Hell.

At its best, though, in both the original survival mode, across the bulk of the campaign and in the one-off challenge of the week maps, They Are Billions remains a tight and compelling strategy game. The knowledge that you're always just one misstep away from disaster creates a gripping, tense atmosphere that's unusual for the genre. And the cycle from defense to offense and back again as you progress from one wave to the next offers both well-paced urgency and the ability to set clear short-term goals. Davvero un peccato che il gioco non sia del tutto adatto alle console e ai comandi del controller, due colpe non del tutto imputabili agli sviluppatori, quanto più al genere strategico in se.

They Are Billions mescola un ritmo da city builder con la tensione di un souls-like (ecco, sono riuscito a tirarli in mezzo!) in salsa strategica, e per farlo purifica entrambi i generi filtrandone l’essenza più basilare. Nel cocktail che ne esce, la parte gestionale è quella che dà più gusto, mentre l’altra ne esce diluita, appiattita e ridotta a una questione di quantità invece che di qualità. Rimane comunque un titolo dalla forte personalità, anche estetica, che gode di un carisma tutto suo, fiero dei propri tratti distintivi e di non scendere a compromessi.

Tras pasar con notable éxito por el Acceso Anticipado, They Are Billions se ha enfrentado a su prueba de fuego y la ha pasado con éxito. Es cierto que la campaña no aguanta el tirón de alargar una fórmula que es algo más limitada de lo que necesita un RTS para durar tantas horas. Sin embargo las sensaciones de tensión y angustia son tan brutales y el juego necesita tanta atención por nuestra parte que es una experiencia que, como mínimo, hay que probar… ¡Y sufrir!

Es una verdadera lástima que They Are Billions no llegue a consolas con todos su modos y con todas las horas de juego que nos hubiera gustado, pero eso no quita que siga siendo una auténtica joya en el género de estrategia y tower defense que pone a prueba, a niveles realmente considerables, la capacidad y habilidad de cada jugador para adaptarse al medio –los escenarios y mapas- y sobrevivir tanto tiempo como le sea posible. Si has visto mucho The Walking Dead y lo tuyo es ser un estratega del apocalipsis, They Are Billions es una parada obligatoria.

Establishing and expanding a colony while defending against increasingly difficult hordes of infected makes for a very engrossing experience in They Are Billions, though some questionable design choices make shambling through the lengthy Singleplayer campaign a bit of a slog at times.

The fusion of genres in They Are Billions is brilliant, very solid and fun. It is also a game that does not make concessions in terms of difficulty, but that is fair to the player, since it depends on him being prepared for each zombie wave. Recently console versions got the same Story Mode than PC by a free update. Any lover of RTS, should try the game.

They Are Billions is a solid single-player real-time strategy game. You'll get some good hours out of it, and have the chance to compete against others on the leaderboards.

Personally, there haven’t been that many games that originated on PC that would announce a console port that I would get excited for. I was ecstatic when Diablo 3 came to consoles and other game as well like Hollow Knight, Slay The Spire, and etc. They Are Billions was a game that got a ton of press attention on Steam and I was excited to hear that it would come to PS4 and Xbox One. It had been a while since an RTS game that was noteworthy came to consoles and I wanted to see how that story would unfold. RTS games have always had this problem of trying to achieve the barrier of a gamepad centered control scheme. They Are Billions came to PS4 and Blitworks did an amazing job at making sure the game ran well but the caveat being that it’s just another “console RTS game.” I highly recommend playing this amazing game but know that this is a lesser product when compared to its PC predecessor. Currently, Survival is the only mode available while the campaign mode will be added at a later date. The game is still engrossing and developing optimal builds and structure placement makes the They Are Billions worthwhile. If you’re going to play on TV, you may want to scoot a bit closer and keep in mind which input shortcuts work best for you. Otherwise, you’ll have to buy a mouse and keyboard if you want the “optimal” experience but don’t buy them solely for this game. They Are Billions no es un juego para novatos en el género y su justo rigor se hace sentir desde sus primeros compáces. Si logramos romper esa barrera y estar dispuestos a jugar bajo una constante tensión de asedio y descontrol, la propuesta de Numantian Games te garantiza horas de diversión. Estar en todos los detalles puede resultar muy satisfactorio, pero si no tenés paciencia la frustración no tardará en llegar.

That said, there's really something here to enjoy in They Are Billions. Taken as a whole, it is an entirely new and interesting take on genres that are as old as gaming. Billions has such great moments at times that it's rather surprising that these genres hadn't been smashed together already. Billions leaves plenty to be desired everywhere else though—in visual fidelity, art direction, sound design, and even game balance. Clearly, this is a first step on a new and mysterious frontier. Hopefully, not the last.

While the game itself is really quite good, the lack of gameplay options and lack of thought into porting over the control scheme make for an average experience overall. This is a port that feels very much like one done with the absolute minimal effort required, and that's just not good enough for 2019 when so many other games this year have done so much better in this same PC to console space.

They Are Billions blends the best aspects of tower defense and real-time strategy to create a tense and oppressive atmosphere where one mistake can lead to the downfall of your entire colony. It's stressful, it's challenging, and it's rewarding, offering just about everything people love about real-time strategy. A lack of content and variety, alongside some small technical issues, hold it back from being truly excellent, but regardless, They Are Billions is a fantastic new take on the RTS genre.

Sin embargo, a pesar de que jugablemente es robusto y esconde un muy buen programa, tiene una serie de problemas que le van restando puntos. La ausencia de campaña, texto minúsculo, jugar con el mando no es muy agradable, no hay tutoriales… Con todo  ello, pensamos que con un poco más de esfuerzo en esos puntos estaríamos hablando de un lanzamiento muy a tener en cuenta, mientras que tal y como está es una compra recomendada si eres amante del género y buscas un desafío y un título al que dedicarle horas. Porque They are billions es exigente y no permite que se juegue de forma casual. Si lo haces, los zombis te devorarán. En resumidas cuentas, está bastante bien, pero deja la impresión de que podría haber sido aún mejor.

They Are Billions es un tremendo juego de estrategia con temática zombie, muy bueno en todos sus apartados y muy adictivo. El trabajo de Numantian Games es excelente y lo recomiendo sin lugar a dudas. Sin embargo, como usuario de la ya existente versión de Steam, no puedo decir que recomiende ahora mismo la versión de consolas. Es buena, pero la falta de contenido respecto a la versión de PC me ha parecido un punto muy negativo y a tener en cuenta.

Ich hatte bereits etliche Stunden in They Are Billions investiert, als der Titel sich noch im Early-Access-Status befand. Daher habe ich mich umso mehr gefreut, endlich eine vollwertige Kampagne zu erleben. Doch schnell setzte die Ernüchterung ein. Vor allem das eintönige Missionsdesign und das fast vollständige Fehlen einer Geschichte sind wirklich enttäuschend. Wirklich viel Spaß hatte ich daher nicht mit der Kampagne, aber immerhin funktioniert die Grundmechanik selbst hier ausgezeichnet. Sein Potenzial entfesselt They are Billions erst im freien Spiel. Vor allem in einem der hohen Schwierigkeitsgrade ist das so richtig fesselnd und schon eine falsche Entscheidung kann das Ende bedeuten. Das stete Optimieren des Wirtschaftskreislaufes und der Aufbau der Verteidigung motivieren noch dazu über lange Zeit. Abseits der Kampagne kann der Titel also immer noch überzeugen, obwohl es nicht viele Neuerungen in der Vollversion gibt.

At the time of this writing, the PS4 and Xbox One versions lack the campaign mode you can find in the PC iteration. While this isn’t a huge detriment (the campaign is not the main draw), the control schemes are unwieldy on a console controller. You can alleviate this by using a mouse and keyboard on your console setup, but your goal should be to experience the title on PC.

The idea behind it – a survival strategy with "realistic" zombie mechanics – is fantastic and the actual mechanics behind it are well thought out and make for a deep and enthralling strategy, if one that may be a little too challenging for some. If that sounds great to you then being light on content may not matter, as there aren't many, if any other games that fit into this particular niche.

Due to They Are Billions’ difficulty, compounded by its permadeath feature, it’s easy to assume that only hardcore gamers will feel welcome in its hostile steampunk world. It’s true; players looking for strategy game that’s going to hold their hand likely will feel out of their depth here. But stick with it and take the time to learn the game’s intricacies, and there’s a lot of fun to be had with They Are Billions. It isn’t for everyone, but there’s not much else that compares to the rush of thousands upon thousands of zombies swarming your settlement all at once.

They Are Billions is a wonderful game – on PC. This direct Xbox port is not only missing crucial features from its PC counterpart, like the campaign mode, but has horrendous controls that practically beg you to use a mouse and keyboard instead.

They Are Billions does a lot of things great. The survival twist of a city-builder is unique, and lots of fun. Dealing with the huge waves is always as fun as it is stressful, including the huge final waves. Things that hold the game back are difficulty playing a computer game on console controls, and various UI and graphics issues as well as slowdown. This being said, it's a solid and unique RTS title.

They Are Billions boasts strong central ideas about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps to industrialize in the face of grave danger. This is done incredibly well, from the aesthetics to the music and especially the upgrade trees. All of these work in tandem so well that it's cool to see, but unfortunately, the follow-through for the console version isn't done well enough. This on its own is pretty damning, and coupled with the strange aesthetics makes the game considerably less enjoyable. The PC version may run better with the controls, interface and menus.

"They Are Billions" is a kernel of a great game. I'm sure that the more complete PC release is thoroughly satisfying, but the console release, in its current state, feels incomplete. The developers forgot that the game is no longer in Early Access and have released a game that, ultimately, lacks some basic features. Nevertheless, I recommend it to fans of Tower Defense games and RTS'es, or at least I recommend picking it up once the title is actually complete.

They Are Billions began to attract the attention of the community thanks to the early access for PC. Finally reaching the console community, it grants access to a lot more players. Unfortunately, that comes at a cost with a cut in content with respect to the PC version.

Armed with a decent aesthetic and a unique twist of horror and real time strategy, The Are Billions is let down by a rigid gameplay loop, a lack of building variety and a steep difficulty curve. While there is fun to be had here, and the game certainly has its fair share of stand-out moments, veterans of the genre will be disappointed with the simplicity of building whilst newbies may find themselves struggling to work out the best strategy for expanding and progressing.

Bump that score up three points if you’re playing on PC. They Are Billions is clearly a solid game with an interesting concept that’s executed well. It’s also clearly not meant to be played on console.

There’s still an excellent time to be had here if you’re a patient player with a penchant for easy modes (managing my units in a more difficult scenario may have resulted in a controller-through-the-TV incident). They Are Billions is certainly an impressive game that can be on PS4. Whether it should, or at least whether it should yet, is another question. The port feels fairly rushed overall, with little consideration given to the changes in control dynamics and player setup that come into question when running on console.

They Are Billions is a brilliant game that breaths fresh life into the RTS formula. Its setting, concept, and execution make it a wonderful addition to the genre. However, the console port with poor controls will most likely leave players frustrated and wishing they had picked it up on PC. As much as I loved the title I cannot recommend it for a console. So if you’re interested in They are Billions I would strongly recommend taking a look at the PC version of this zombie survival RTS.

They Are Billions is a fun enough game for those looking for a nice hybrid of the survival and base-building strategy games even if neither aspect feels as fleshed out as it could. While the steampunk setting and addition of zombies adds a fresh layer of paint to things, it's not nearly enough to sustain the game for too long, especially when the controls are often so frustrating that some players will find themselves pausing or turning the game off entirely to take a break because of it. Regardless, there's still a really fun game underneath all of the flaws, and a level of suspense that almost makes it worth ignoring them.

Overall, I had a fairly mixed experience with They Are Billions. I liked the art style and the concept of the game. I quite enjoyed battling the zombies as a steampunk mastermind, however I disliked certain features of the game.

They Are Billions has some interesting concepts, but doesn’t deliver a satisfying console RTS that I can get into.

Overall, with a slightly higher than the expected price point of £19.99, I wouldn’t recommend you take a punt on the game if you’re slightly interested in the genre and/or theme. This game is for fans of the RTS genre who are looking for a challenge and I’m sure that the game will build a cult following of hardcore RTS fans, however with no tutorial and campaign to support newcomers to the genre, I’d give the They Are Billions a Thumb Culture Bronze Award.

It’s possible that the PC’s campaign will be added to the PS4 at some point in the future, but no plans have been announced. As it stands, They Are Billions on PS4 is a title whose strong RTS fundamentals and brilliant premise are undercut by the complete failure to respect someone’s time or offer any reason to keep coming back once the novelty of the first few hours has worn off.

If you’re after a fun survival RTS or a game that tests your ability to make strong defences, before kicking you to the floor They Are Billions is for you. The game is fun, but take a few failures to really get into.

Si en aquel 2019 este juego dejó su marca en los canales de Twitch y estuvo en boca de todos, fue porque despertó de nuevo el terror primigenio que muchos jugadores de estrategia sentimos al ver un mapa lleno de puntos rojos dirigiéndose al corazón de la base que tanto nos ha costado levantar.
