All in all, I enjoyed my time playing Godstrike and I’ll likely go back to it, just not handheld as I don’t fancy throwing my switch across the room after my 111th death in a row. I’d quite easily recommend this game, IF you’re the intended audience. It’s super fun and extremely satisfying. I hate this game. But at the same time I adore it. 9/10, would play again. Great work by OverPowered Team. Keep it up!

Finally, it must be said that this work, due to its very high difficulty, is in dire need of trial and error during experimentation. Its difficulty makes the game skill-oriented and reaches a point where you can only go through the desired stage when you have worked hard for it. So if you have enough senses and concentration to experience this game, get it now, which will be one of your most valuable experiences.

While it's easy to call a game, "too hard," Godstrike goes above and beyond to savage you. Unless you're willing to put in the time and pain, this will not be an enjoyable experience. However, if you can ride the crest of the difficulty curve, this bullet hell bonanza will keep you coming back for even more brutality.

Godstrike fulfils that baseline need all boss rush games do – the thrill of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds. Its primary mechanical hook of entwining health and battle time into powerful abilities creates fantastic, tense battles. However it’s the smaller things that hold the experience back. A distinct lack of characterising flair for the bosses through story or music hurt their memorability, and the unrelenting difficulty amongst the chaos, while exhilarating to overcome, is still (at times) overbearing. Regardless of its rough edges though, Godstrike is enjoyable as a quick hit of intense action.

Godstrike is a treat, if a slightly messy one. There’s a clear debt to bullet hell shooters, with the game largely inspired by Furi, which also had clear shoot ‘em up-inspired sections in its boss gauntlet. Godstrike doubles down on nailing the feeling of working out a pattern, and dismantling a complex boss as you effortlessly dodge a tapestry of gunfire, whilst adding the great risk-reward mechanic of the timer-as-health-bar.

Godstrike can be a rewarding puzzle-shooter experience, but its inconsistent difficulty hinders enjoyment, leading to frustrating early battles that marr the game's positives. There is little to no story to pull players through its more challenging moments, but the time/health system is a tough, unique puzzle that can elevate Godstrike from a repetitive slogfest, into an experience worth your many deaths.

Godstrike is a passable attempt at a boss rush game. It is certainly a brutal challenge that will take dozens of attempts to get through, but it’s just not a very fun experience. There’s some potential here with the time mechanic not only being your health but also a resource that you need to manage. The problem lies on the lacklustre boss battles, which comprise the entirety of the game’s runtime, however.

Although I was intrigued by the idea behind GS, I don’t think it works out well in practice. A timer on a boss fight can be an arbitrary way of making it more difficult, and if the balance isn’t set well, it can ruin the experience. By getting rid of a traditional health bar and blending it with the timer, this forces players into a situation where they have to be mindful of how much damage they’re doing to the boss throughout the fight. After all, if they are too defensive or not staying close enough to keep up the DPS, the timer will deplete regardless of whether they take damage or not.

What I would love to see from Godstrike is: 1 – improved enemy attack visibility and the fixing of unwinnable positions to cement itself as a serious icon in the world of leaderboard scrapping; and 2 – a steady stream of DLC content in the form of extra bosses, new powers, and maybe more ways to play to fix its limited content and absence of deeper replayability. There’s an opportunity for something special here and I seriously hope the team manages to make the most of it side-by-side with the community.

Godstrike in many ways feels like an early access game. There are glimpses of a better game in here somewhere, but the overall unpolished feel of its design and presentation really drag down the otherwise solid controls. Revising (or removing) the time mechanic and honing in on a more distinctive art style could’ve made this one a tentative recommendation but, as it stands, that's impossible. If you want a good boss rush game with similar gameplay, we’d recommend you pick up Furi; if you’re looking for a good shmup, there’s no shortage of those to be found on Switch. Either way, we wouldn't bother with this one unless you've exhausted all other options.

While the short run-time of around two to three hours isn’t inherently the root of the problem, one can’t help but note Godstrike is in dire need of a better, fleshed out experience than the one provided. Even so, as unfinished and slap-dash this effort feels, Godstrike rarely comes off all that enticing to either control or jump straight back into upon death. It’s the generally uninspired and empty spectacle of color and imagery that is equally at fault. But it’s mostly the fault of the bizarre emphasis on a timer that ends up the biggest culprit. A mechanic that doesn’t so much work against the player, but whose reason for even being is lost altogether. There are plenty of better examples in the field of boss-rush titles — games that go out of their way to make even the spectacle and world around you, as inviting as their nuanced, tension-building encounters so wonderfully carve out. This, however, is not one of them. For all its screen-popping color and promise of literal time as a vital mechanic for success, Godstrike is a shockingly flat and tedious attempt at standing out.
