Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

All things considered, Mirror of Fate is still a decent game, one that is merely injured by some elements of poor design. It’s a unique approach to rebooting a franchise, one that doesn’t seek to reestablish the rules, but instead utilize them as a guide, thus allowing this new version to travel its own direction.

Supermagical

With its assortment of tweaks and gameplay additions, as well as a story that evolves with Nintendo-esque pacing, Supermagical manages to feel like a whole lot more than merely another casual novelty. Unwitting travelers may find themselves needing to grind if they go on an early spending spree, but the match-three formula is fun enough to wade through this one minor woe. Amazing music and visuals, solid pacing, and ample gameplay variety – this is one hefty app for the asking price.

Yesterday has all the right intentions, but it seems to be in a hurry for some unknown reason. It’s worth a gander given its gourmand attention to detail, especially its affinity to pop off plenty of fireworks. But it’s evident that much of the fundamental elements from the story teller’s handbook were overlooked. Before committing to making the purchase, it’s highly advised to bear in mind that this is just a fix, a piece of overly fanciful cake – something you shouldn’t count on to keep you sated until tomorrow, and certainly something you won’t count amongst your top memorable experiences.

Zack Zero

There’s a reason why no one heard about Zack Zero until it showed up one day on PSN with no fanfare. Zack Zero is strictly amateur hour. Everything from its awful production values to the way it bungles simple platforming is an indicator that the developers lack direction. Even if the player manages to look past the dearth of new concepts and the poor execution, the crashes and profoundly obnoxious pop-up messages will ensure they’ve given up on Zack Zero long before the credits role.

Reverie

The fundamental issue with Reverie is that it never lives up to the epic feeling of Lords of Shadow. Understandably it’s difficult to replicate that scope in such a short amount of time, but it’s also due to the cheap, incomplete feeling it leaves you with. It introduces a short, interesting narrative through its concept art based cutscenes, but doesn’t ever follow through; Reverie is not a standalone piece of content, but rather a precursor, leading immediately into the yet-to-be-released Resurrection content. This revelation leaves the journey’s overall value in question, as you don’t really feel like you’ve accomplished much of anything, but you’re still compelled to see Gabriel’s ultimate fate.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate

There’s a mixed bag of ideas present in Wanted: Weapons of Fate, but as a whole it feels terribly rushed. In the gameplay area, it’s just about competent, but still lacking some vital ingredients. The mechanics surrounding cover and the various techniques the player can utilise are there, but the execution is really nowhere to be found, and despite its stylish appearance and outward level of polish, it’s incredibly light on content. Don’t let it be confused for a polished turd, because it’s rather a polished nothingness, a great big hole where someone left a few useful tools and mysteriously departed. Style is by no means a bad thing, but when it’s too distanced from the player they simply become another spectator, and if Wanted is guilty of nothing else – which, by the way, it is – it’s this.
