GYLT from Tequila Works is a heavy game to bear. Its story is overwhelmingly sad, relatable, and impactful. The gameplay is built to complement the story and the devs did a great job of pulling those two pieces together. This game isn’t for the faint of heart and it will certainly get you in the feels, but the journey is worth the emotional risk.

While its gameplay can feel a little basic at times, we’re really glad that GYLT is now free of Stadia. This is a small but powerful horror title that tackles an important issue while also providing hours of engaging gameplay. And though there’s nothing truly original here, Tequila Works has obviously put this together with care. If nothing else, it deserves praise for simply being a horror game accessible to younger audiences while still being unsettling for all.

In conclusion, GYLT offers an audiovisually captivating and atmospheric adventure that confronts important themes. While it may not revolutionize gameplay mechanics, the game provides an enjoyable experience with solid stealth mechanics, engaging puzzles, and a well-executed art style. Its accessibility to a wider audience, owing to the absence of explicit violence or gore, is worth mentioning considering that this is a horror-themed game. Tequila Works has crafted a game that stands as a testament to the importance of addressing significant issues within the medium of video games, and it’s nice that those who didn’t play around with Stadia now get to enjoy it.

The combat in Gylt is a weak link. Luckily, a robust stealth system makes it easy to avoid fighting altogether. And it’s worth it because, easy though it may be, combat is tedious. You have to shine your flashlight on weak spots to kill enemies, but between the aim assist and the fact baddies don’t often present their weak spots well, you're better off skipping combat when you have the chance. You won’t be stressed for resources if you destroy every enemy you encounter, but your time will be better spent elsewhere, like tracking down the engaging collectibles that greatly expand upon the world.

GYLT falls short of expectations despite promising so much. The theme is strong, but the game relies on clichés and predictable plot twists instead of making a genuine effort to be impactful and memorable in its portrayal. It feels like a minimal attempt to address a powerful theme, and as a result, the good intention gets lost, and the theme becomes diluted by the gameplay.
