The graphics move at a steady clip, taking on a "less is more attitude" and managing to convey a sense of foreboding and horror even without the most detailed, three-dimensional monsters to be found. The experience of Blasphemous is a delight and fans looking for a video game that will manage to present a fair challenge can pick this one up, knowing that they'll be playing one of the most disturbing, immersive experiences in video games this year. From the bloody graphics to haunting music, Blasphemous finds its way into your nightmares and is a game begging to be replayed, thanks to its fantastic gameplay.

Blasphemous takes a few well trodden genres and mashes them into something that is fun, rewarding and downright beautiful. Its story, themes and macabre nature will not suit everyone but I could not get enough of it. Its difficulty is near-perfect, not too hard but enough of a challenge to please most players. Metroidvania fans, Souls-like fans and gamers who want a challenge will revel in this games gorgeously crafted world. Its a brilliantly crafted experience that needs to be played.

Blasphemous successfully manages to carve out it’s own place among the pantheon of fantastic modern indie Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and Guacamelee, with consistently stunning enemy and environment design, wonderfully paced exploration, deep and challenging combat and a tone that is all it’s own.

Blasphemous is a fantastic souls-like Metroidvania, featuring an exceptional aesthetic design that adds to what is one of the most macabre worlds in gaming today. In addition to this, outstanding combat and a range of interesting enemies, bosses and more - supported by some great level design (with some issues in navigation), this is a game that I can do nothing but recommend to anybody and everybody. It's difficult, challenging and most of all, fun.

I liked Blasphemous a lot, it is a well designed Metroidvania game (more Castlevania than Metroid) without the complexities of many modern titles. it has Castlevania's design philosophy and Dark Souls mechanics while creating a sorrowful world of its own. moment to moment gameplay is not as tight as Castlevania though.

Despite being a bit tedious, Blasphemous offers many satisfying moments like being able to find a shortcut or a shrine when you most need it. Some of the quests are really interesting and even if they're not mandatory to finish the game, I would strongly recommend trying to finish as many of them as possible.
The way the story is told (or rather discovered), the amazing artwork, and the fast-paced combat are aspects of the game that grabbed me throughout my playthrough. You'll indeed have to do a lot of backtracking if you want to complete as much as the game as possible, but the rewards are worth it.

Blasphemous isn’t overly complicated with it’s gameplay, and puts it’s focus (wisely) into it’s core. Quality seeps from every disgusting, nightmarish crack as you trudge through, atoning for The Penitent One’s sins. I can’t stress how striking from an artist’s standpoint every aspect of this game is. It’s not a walk in the park by any means either–this is a difficult game, fitting perfectly with the theme. You will stumble and fail on your journey, but you will keep coming back for more. You’ll need more than faith, Penitent One. Have some luck too. You’ll need it.

Though it can be frustrating that its core gameplay never evolves past the often one-note rhythm of hacking and jumping across different levels, keeping it from reaching greater heights, I still came away impressed with how much Blasphemous stuck close to its haunting, dark storyline. Blasphemous is a mostly solid action platformer. Beautiful yet grotesque artwork and fun moment-to-moment gameplay is held back by a few instances of badly flawed level design and some questionable boss mechanics. Look, I like Blasphemous. It’s a game that’s unique in presentation, and despite the slight disconnect with the game mechanics, it’s a solid adventure game. Most of my criticisms stem from whether or not The Game Kitchen focused on so much heavy lore that it affected the game from feeling more tangible or exploring more innovative gameplay mechanics. But if everything I said is not an issue, then you will have fun with this title. A “fans of the genre” if you will. I’m just not a fan of having lore completely takeover a world I’d rather explore on my own.

The aesthetic is incredible, and the map design of Cvstodia is solid and engaging. Unfortunately the game is too bogged down with a high difficulty level that is more tedious than challenging, dragging the entire experience down into something I can hardly bring myself to play. Blasphemous is a beautiful game that I wish I could enjoy more, but the extremely high difficulty of combat and platforming simply does not mesh well with the amount of exploration and backtracking needed from a world as expansive as this one.
