Weird Beluga's 3D platformer embraces elements from the great classics of the PlayStation 2 era and makes them its own in an experience that's as fun as it is familiar. Duskfade is accessible, simple, and fun. A 3D platformer that celebrates the classics without losing sight of its own identity, featuring memorable characters and an entertaining story. Without a doubt, one of my favorite games so far this year.

Duskfade is the kind of game that reminds you why you fell in love with video games in the first place. With a delightful mix of classic 3D platforming, fun exploration, fast-paced combat, and simply enchanting art direction, Zirian’s adventure manages to convey magic without feeling like just another nostalgic copy.

Duskfade delivers virtually everything you'd expect from an excellent 3D action-platformer: fluid movement, rewarding exploration, fun combat, creative bosses, beautiful art direction, and a narrative that successfully balances fantasy, mystery, and emotion. The game also stands out for respecting the player's pace, offering useful collectibles, good skill progression, and a rhythm that keeps everything consistently interesting. The adventure is incredibly captivating and recaptures the spirit of genre classics while building its own identity.

There’s no doubting that Duskfade was made with a love for action-adventure games, but the combination of simple, enjoyable combat and platforming that challenges the way you engage with the movement abilities makes it stand out as a shining example of the genre, even if it does adopt some of its flaws along the way.

In these dark times of game ownership and obsolete disk drives, Duskfade burns brightly as a shining beacon of why we all fell in love with games in the first place. A fantastically fun experience with real heart. Challenging at times, grin inducing most others, here’s hoping this is the first of many. It’s been far too long since titles have been made with this much love and care outside of the big red gaming behemoth and the small moustached plumber.

Duskfade might not reinvent the clockwork, but it certainly knows how to make the hours fly by.
It’s a gorgeous, heartfelt adventure that leans heavily into the nostalgia of classic platformers, and honestly, that’s a big part of its charm. I’ll definitely be going for the 100% completion in the days to come and will lovingly revisit this colourful world many times over in the years to come! Duskfade had me hooked from the first gear to the final tick, and I’m already wishing I could turn back the clock and play it again.

Duskfade isn’t simply a love letter to the action platformers of the ’90s and early ’00s; it’s an ode to them, bringing their influences together so effortlessly that the result feels like something you’ve played before and something new and exciting at the same time. Weird Beluga has clearly spent years studying what made those games so special, but Duskfade never feels trapped by its influences. Instead, it takes those ideas and gives them new life, building a world and adventure that feels familiar without sacrificing its own identity.

Duskfade is an adventure that wins you over through its heart more than the complexity of its systems. Despite some limitations in its combat, progression, and pacing, its delightful exploration, charming art direction, and charismatic characters make the journey worthwhile. It captures that wonderful feeling of classic 3D platformers and proves there is still room for adventures made simply to make us smile, explore, and keep playing. I love how the PS2 defined the 3D platforming era. It was exciting, original, and full of absolute belters! Accordingly, I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to try my hand at Duskfade. It is a PS2-inspired title that helps lovers of the genre get their nostalgia hit. More than that, though, it has a deep and meaningful story that drives many touching subjects.Sony PlayStation
Weird Beluga Studios has developed this single-player 3D adventure platformer. It is brilliantly retro, as there are puzzles to complete, tight spaces to navigate, and plenty of familiar mechanics. However, it is nicely polished, and I love the theme-related settings, the drip-fed mechanics, and the almost never-ending combat.

DuskFade is much more than a platformer that pays homage to great titles of the past; it delivers a solid story with compelling characters, excellent exploration and art direction, and great 3D platforming moments.Even though the combat could use some extra polish and the game lacks certain quality-of-life improvements—such as an easier way to track collectible progress in each region—the experience remains unique.

"Duskfade" absolutely lives up to the high expectations. Exploring the world is a joy, unlocking the story of Zirian's family—her grandfather, sister, and the cloud beings—piece by piece, and getting emotionally swept away. The combat sections between bosses can sometimes feel a bit repetitive, but unlocking new abilities adds enough variety to make it bearable. The boss fights are phenomenal, and I wish I could replay them outside of the story. Maybe even on a higher difficulty level, because they're genuinely fun! Anyone who enjoys 3D action-platformers should definitely give "Duskfade" a try!

Duskfade is a well-made 3D platforming adventure game, taking clear notes from larger titles in platforming controls, music, and character design. Zirian chases his sister Allira into Tick Town, a dimension where time has stopped and the Clock Tower holds her prisoner behind four chains that need breaking one by one, scattered across the macro-areas of Tearvale. Weird Beluga, already behind Clid the Snail, builds a third-person action-platformer around this mission that looks openly to Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Kingdom Hearts, relying on a clockpunk world painted entirely by hand – no AI involved, by the studio’s own declared choice – five lighting setups for every major area, and a mechanical companion, Cuckoo, who joins Zirian in both exploration and combat. Beneath the action-platform surface, the game works through a story of grief and family legacy rooted in the loss of Gramps, one that time travel – literal, through Minutero, the sword he left behind – turns into a question that follows Zirian through the whole adventure. Platforming stays the strongest part of the experience from the earliest hours; combat, shakier at the start, only gains depth halfway through, once combos finally enter the picture.

Duskfade succeeds because it knows what kind of game it wants to be. It doesn’t try to reinvent 3D platformers or compete with big AAA productions. It takes the most enjoyable parts of the genre and builds a modern adventure around them. A game inspired by titles like Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and (especially) Kingdom Hearts, but one that struggles a bit to find its footing and offer something original. The first half is a bit of a slog, but once a few key mechanics are introduced, the game becomes fun and replayable thanks to its pseudo-3D Metroidvania structure. The platforming mechanics and lock-on system require some getting used to, but overall, Duskfade is enjoyable and suitable for a very wide audience thanks to its multiple difficulty levels.

Duskfade is a charming, enjoyable, and well-made little platformer that falls just short of being a true classic. The platforming and combat are fun, the story is well told, and the game's overall presentation is delightful. It's held back by stiff combat and tedious backtracking, but neither problem is enough to completely undermine the experience. If you're looking for a PS2-style platformer with a Kingdom Hearts flavor, Duskfade hits most of the marks and is absolutely worth checking out. Duskfade is the epitome of a flawed gem. There's an excellent game in here, but Weird Beluga hasn't quite managed to find it yet. Duskfade thus feels like a great 'proof of concept' release where, despite the jank, it provides a strong foundation for a potential sequel to build upon.Gorgeous graphical design, enjoyable platforming, and a heartfelt story all make this one a worthwhile endeavour, even if the combat can get tiresome and navigation frustrating. I'd suggest picking up Duskfade if you're feeling particularly nostalgic for the early-2000s era of gaming, though perhaps this is one to hold out for a modest sale before grabbing it.

It is always difficult to evaluate the merits of a game that is hampered by technical issues. On one hand, there is the experience lying beneath all those problems, and there is a lot of good there; recognizing this means acknowledging the developers' competence in creating a solid, creative foundation for the game. On the other hand, when viewing games as products—given that there is a price to pay to acquire them—receiving a title marred by technical flaws does not seem like a good deal.

To be clear, Duskfade is a perfectly competent 3D platformer. Fans of the genre will no doubt find that there is some fun to be had with it. However, those expecting innovation won't really find it here. Basic combat encounters become dull pretty quickly, and platforming can be less precise than expected thanks to the protagonist's floaty jump making things far trickier than they need to be. Boss fights are a high point, with each encounter well thought-out, but Duskfade's world is nowhere near as intriguing to navigate as it first appears. There's not much in the way of exploration to be had, or secrets to find, and the game's largely forgettable cast and narrative do little to ensure Duskfade doesn't quickly fade into a distant memory once the credits roll.
