Mirror of Fate es un producto completo y consciente de si, que no duda ni un momento en homenajear a la serie Castlevania y sus elementos más clásicos, al primer Lords of Shadow e incluso en ocasiones a si mismo con natural acierto. Con este juego Mercury Steam vuelve a consagrarse como el mejor estudio español de videojuegos hasta la fecha. Un conjunto de personas que no solo funciona de manera individual, un escritor, un compositor o un ilustrador… Sino como un engranaje colectivo. Pues es desde la cohesión entre todos esos elementos con la jugabilidad de donde surgen las grandes obras como Mirror of Fate.

Mirror of Fate se sitúa entre lo más granado del catálogo de 3DS, merced a su excelente adaptación de las mecánicas “hack and slash” de Lords of Shadow. Mercury Steam ha sabido sorber toda la sangre de la portátil.

I had a lot of fun with Mirror of Fate. It feels like a big game that works very well for portable play, which is a significant accomplishment. While the combat wasn’t always engaging, the soundtrack and presentation were always enough to keep me into the game. Boss fights are fun and varied, and the excellent checkpointing system kept the big encounters from becoming frustrating. Castlevania fans and 3DS owners alike will find a lot to enjoy here.

Adulto, rico y disfrutable a más no poder gracias a acción, plataformas, puzzles y una historia impactante. No creo en el juego perfecto, pero Mirror of Fate me ha hecho replanteármelo.

It's a compromise between action and exploration, between the series' history and contemporary trends, between traditional presentation and modern technology. It's the best Castlevania game we've played in years and it might be the best action game we've ever played on a handheld console.

En conclusión, creo que estamos ante un título sobresaliente y uno de los auténticos imprescindibles de la portátil de Nintendo. Me está gustado el giro que ha dado la saga con 'Castlevania: Lords of Shadow', y creo que 'Mirror of Fate' es una entrega para portátil arriesgada, pero muy satisfactoria. Tiene errores que lo alejan de la perfección, he comentado algunos de ellos, pero es un título que merece la pena que tenga un hueco en vuestra colección.

En Castlevania: Lord of Shadows - Mirror of Fate nos encontraremos una vuelta a los orígenes de la saga. Sin centrarse excesivamente en entornos laberínticos y en ocasiones desesperantes de los títulos dirigidos por Igarashi, esta nueva entrega conserva los toques de exploración, junto al componente plataformero de los juegos clásicos 2D de la consola de 8 bits de Nintendo. Además, y pese a manterer ese toque retro que tanto gusta hoy día, combina esa esencia nostálgica con la acción más trepidante de los hack and slash actuales.

A todo esto se le suma una buena historia (apta para todo tipo de jugadores conozcan o no juegos anteriores de la franquicia) donde conoceremos los secretos y la historia de la familia Belmont y su relación con Drácula; un entorno gráfico de escenarios sublime y una ejecución en la banda sonora y en las cualidades 3D de Nintendo 3DS de lo mejorcito que podemos disfrutar actualmente.

Sjefskampene er kreative, overrumplende og utfordrende, og fiendeutvalget ytterst severdig og urovekkende. Mirror of Fate er i det hele tatt en en potent underholdningsbombe du sannsynligvis ikke finner maken til for øyeblikket på 3DS, så regn med mange paniske løpeturer til ladestasjonen med blinkende rød batterilampe.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate couldn’t have many more subtitles attached to it. It also couldn’t be a much better game than it is. Outside of a couple of control issues, there isn’t a lot to not like, and I love that the developers chose to tailor-make an experience for the 3DS that was clearly made with the hardware in mind. Instead of trying to make a dumbed-down game in the vein of its console cousin, they crafted something that stands apart from it while also paying homage to many of the franchise’s best games over the past 15 years. Mirror of Fate manages to make the once well-worn Metroidvania formula new again by using this reboot-based version of the franchise, and is a must-play for any fans of the series.

Mercury Steam vuelve a anteponer su visión y a creer en sí misma con un Castlevania, en esta ocasión portátil, que supone un "reboot" con respecto a los clásicos de Konami en 2D. Un videojuego con elementos Metroidvania, un sistema de combate puramente Lords of Shadow y una gran duración que puede llegar a superar las 10 horas. En definitiva, un cartucho potente en lo jugable pero aún más en lo tecnológico, sacando provecho del potencial de Nintendo 3DS tanto en su vertiente estereoscópica como puramente gráfica. Todo un referente para las futuras aventuras de esta consola y una parada obligada para todos aquellos que posean -o quieran hacerse- con la plataforma.

Mirror Of Fate comfortably sits in the first category. Its mixture older-style exploration with LoS' combat results in not only a truly great Castlevania game, but also a great action title and one of the best offerings on Nintendo's console.

Así que entre 11 y 12 horas de juego para completar el título al 100% por primera vez. En general estamos ante uno de los mejores títulos third-party de 3DS y en general de mucha calidad, aunque es un poco más light de lo que esperábamos los fans del primer ‘Lords of Shadow’, algo que puede ser entendible en un juego 2D portátil.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD es un buen titulo de acción y aventura, enfocado tanto para aquellos fans de la saga como los que empezaron con el primer Lords of Shadow. Gráficamente es aceptable, tiene escenas animadas entretenidas, y una historia que nos mantendrá pegados al juego desde el comienzo hasta el final. Además, tenemos distintos pasajes secretos indispensables para completar el juego al 100%,  un modo contrarreloj, y tres personajes para utilizar.

Sin dudas es una muy interesante opción de compra.

El original de 3DS era el perfecto candidato para resucitar en alta definición, dando lugar a una aventura larga y variada, con muchas posibilidades y que no decepciona en ninguno de sus apartados.

Mirror of Fate es un excelente experimento que demuestra la pasión de MercurySteam por Castlevania. Tiene defectos, sin mencionar que le faltó definición en ciertos aspectos, incluido el defectuoso esquema de plataformas o el hecho de que hay muy pocos acertijos, pero también es una de las propuestas más emocionantes del 3DS, saturada de experiencias memorables y momentos cinemáticos.

I personally enjoy the 2D Castlevania titles, so I was skeptical to play Mirror of Fate.  Of course, I was also skeptical of another developer taking over one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history, and that turned out pretty great.  Now we see MercurySteam taking the same approach to the franchise in the handheld space, and again with decent results.  Combat remains fast and furious, bosses are still super-huge, and the canon-bending 9-hour storyline gives us a new take on a game we’ve been essentially repeating since its debut in 1986.  While there are some rough edges, there is enough here to recommend.  Mirror of Fate also represents the best use of 3D that I’ve seen in a handheld game thus far.  You’ve missed a few great RPGs if your Nintendo 3DS has been gathering dust, but adding this title to your library will solve that problem for you rather quickly.

Mirror of Fate’s overarching story, though designated in chunks to a handful of the series’ well-known faces, ends up adding little of importance to the experience. From time to time, it takes small breaks to address the larger plot in the form of graphic, darkly lined animation. But what defines and legitimizes the experience is its deft framing and execution of environments and situations, not the Belmonts’ melodrama or having to check itself to series’ expectations. Mirror of Fate is a confident interpretation of well-trod mechanics and themes, and the Castlevania name is stronger for it.

En su estreno en una consola portátil, MercurySteam vuelve a realizar un gran juego, adaptando perfectamente su personal visión del universo Castlevania a las particularidades de 3DS, incluidas sus ventajas -el efecto 3D-, y sus inconvenientes –ciertas limitaciones técnicas-. El hecho de ser en dos dimensiones y recuperar personajes clásicos podría dar a entender que estamos ante un Castlevania que sigue la estela de anteriores entregas portátiles, pero ni mucho menos, y estamos ante la adaptación de lo visto en Lords of Shadow a una jugabilidad 2D.

Mirror of Fate is a worthwhile endeavor for any 3DS owner, and should make Castlevania fans consider picking up the handheld if they don’t have one already. The impressive cutscenes flesh out the Lords of Shadow fiction with fun twists, and should be required reading before Lords of Shadow 2 arrives.

Tras relanzar la saga y colocarla en lo más alto, los chicos de Mercury Steam han querido unificar la nueva mecánica de juego con la de los episodios clásicos y la etapa más plataformera/exploradora de la saga, y el resultado es notable, aunque no tan brillante como el original. Con todo, el trabajo realizado en los distintos apartados del juego salta a la vista, y tenemos un cartucho redondo en muchos aspectos que arrancará más de una sonrisa de satisfacción a los fans de la saga.

Tres años han pasado ya desde que empuñamos el nuevo Vampire Killer, desde que Gabriel Belmont se adentró en un sendero contra los Señores Oscuros que condujo a la resurrección de una saga necesitada de ello en sobremesa, que ahora continúa por avatares del destino en terreno portátil aunque no de la mano de Koji Igarashi. Mirror of Fate es la traslación a un entorno 2D del universo jugable y visual de Lords of Shadow al que MercurySteam le ha añadido elementos y referencias a la saga y a una jugabilidad bidimensional que siempre se ha sentido la adecuada para la serie Akumajo. A medio camino entre un estilo y otro, cierto es que este espejo del destino no se convertirá en una sinfonía de la noche, aunque sí es capaz de reflejar ese sentido Metroidvania de exploración que creímos se perdería para siempre tras el reboot. Podemos achacarle que la personalización y subida de nivel son automáticas, que no dura la cantidad de horas prometida o que no se ha alcanzado el mismo equilibrio en plataformas que en combate, pero a cambio revisitaremos desde la nostalgia que esas 2D brindan una historia de personajes más que de acontecimientos, cada uno con sus habilidades y magias que deberán volver sobre sus pasos para explorar un mapeado que vamos descubriendo cuadrícula a cuadrícula en la pantalla táctil, pero que en la superior y con el 3D activado supone una experiencia visual tan bella y cautivadora en multitud de pasajes como profundamente inmersiva como pocas ha visto el sistema de Nintendo.  Quizás que el destino de los Belmont de MercurySteam ya haya sido fijado y los lleve a cerrar la serie usando de nuevo entornos 3D en sobremesa, pero sin duda que se han ganado el derecho de empuñar una vez más el Vampire Killer si tras Lords of Shadow 2 desean mostrarnos de nuevo el destino del clan en ese espejo 2D que Gabriel, Trevor, Simon y Alucard contemplan en silencio.

Mit “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate“ kehrt das Kultfranchise endlich zurück in die 2D-Welt und das mit Erfolg. Der Weg zurück zu den Wurzeln weiß zu gefallen, aber bis zu den Kultablegern der Reihe fehlt doch noch etwas. Das Gameplay überzeugt wie auch die Optik, wobei ich mir einen höheren Schwierigkeitsgrad sowie mehr Rollenspieleinfluss gewünscht hätte. „Mirror of Fate“ macht vieles richtig, aber nun mal nicht alles – dennoch ist der Titel eine Empfehlung wert: Ein Must-have für die Genre-Fans!

The best portable Castlevania for years and a more than equal follow-up to Lords Of Shadow – not to mention one of the best-looking games so far on the 3DS.

Castlevania es una saga que no se puede dejar pasar, lo juegues o no, marcan pauta para los títulos que lo siguen y este no fue la excepción. Poco a poco Lords of Shadow se ha ido posicionando como una pieza importante dentro del universo Castlevania y ahora los jugadores de PC tienen la oportunidad de jugar a la versión definitiva del título, dejandolos listos para recibir su continuación el proximo Febrero.

Mirror of Fate no es un titulo difícil. Con dos técnicas aprendidas con el látigo entrelazadas y el guardado automático que tiene el juego, será suficiente para acabarlo en unas 10-12 horas y con mas del 95% completado, pero de todas maneras es una experiencia disfrutable. Es una digna adaptación del gameplay de Lords of Shadow en el formato Castlevania 2D. Lo más criticable podría ser la poca variedad en el combate y lo poco inspirado que son las secciones de plataforma, pero lo compensa con un apartado gráfico potente y una historia interesante y bien contada. Lo importante es que crea un precedente de alta calidad a una saga que esperamos se expanda y que soportaría bastante bien el paso a consolas mayores. Sin duda el juego de Mercury Steam tiene méritos suficiente. Mirror of Fate es un título que nos deja los dientes largos a la espera de Lords of Shadow 2 (guiño guiño)

Al final, Mirror of Fate es un título que posee un valor propio, a pesar de estar planeado y pensado como el contexto del verdadero plato fuerte —Lords of Shadow 2. Al final, no alcanza las alturas conseguidas por los títulos clásicos de la franquicia, pero es una renovación válida y con propuesta de la fórmula que no puede hacer otra cosa salvo beneficiar a la serie.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate es sin duda una de las mejores aventuras de la consola portátil de Nintendo. Quizás a los más puristas de la saga clásica no convenza esta nuevo reinicio de la saga, pero la mayoría agradecerán un cambio en ella y sabrán aprovechar sus virtudes, que son muchas.

No es un juego perfecto y peca de ser discreto gráficamente, pero su nivel artístico es de lo mejor que hay. Tiene una excelente banda sonora que acompaña muy bien durante todo el juego y sobre todo en los momentos de acción.

Es muy entretenido a pesar de que es corto, pero al mismo tiempo también es rejugable por la cantidad de ítems que podemos encontrar a lo largo de su transcurso.

Al final, no creo que Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate tenga la misma entidad y la misma rotundidad que sus hermanos (el que ya conocemos y el que está por nacer) para sobremesa, pero queda claro que es una pieza importante de la trilogía de Drácula de MercurySteam. Desde luego, es una pieza importante del catálogo de Nintendo 3DS: su primer Castlevania después de que los de la primera DS dejaran el listón muy alto, y en eso Mirror of Fate puede ir con la cabeza bien alta; como Lords of Shadow, es una remodelación bastante aguda de los esquemas clásicos de la serie, una que pone más énfasis en el combate y la narración que en la exploración, aunque se nota el cariño por el pasado y el ojo puesto en reproducir (y homenajear) ciertos usos y costumbres de los anteriores Castlevania. Mirror of Fate es, como Lords of Shadow, un cisma; uno calmado, sereno, pero que, con todo, tiene afán de separación. Es fácil imaginar, tenemos pruebas, por qué Kojima y compañía confiaron tanto en estos demonios extranjeros cuando se propusieron darle la vuelta por completo a algo tan japonés como Castlevania. 

En resumen, Mirror of Fate HD brinda a los usuarios de PS3 y Xbox 360 la posibilidad de descubrir el episodio intermedio en la trilogía Lords of Shadow, aportando su carácter propio y novedades para suplir la ausencia del 3D y portabilidad para los que el título fue diseñado. Cierto es que en 3DS y gracias al efecto, es uno de los juegos que mejor se ven, mientras que en las consolas de actual generación no dejan de ser un título de descarga más en alta definición. A pesar de ello, y de cómo el aspecto sonoro se queda algo atrás con respecto al resto del juego, la presentación general de la historia y del sistema de juego hacen que sea un título bastante destacable en los servicios de descarga, con una calidad por encima de la media que garantiza entre 15 y 20 horas de diversión para completarlo todo mientras disfrutas del castillo. Y si de regalo viene una demo del esperadísimo Lords of Shadow 2 por el mismo precio, se convierte en una compra muy amortizable.

Estamos ante un Castlevania que encaja más como título descargable que como juego para una portátil de Nintendo, sobre todo porque las entregas aparecidas para esta marca en los últimos años han apostado por el desarrollo laberíntico que ahora añoramos. Una vez asimilado lo que no es, tenemos un buen juego que consigue engancharnos con una historia bien llevada y un desarrollo entretenido hasta su conclusión. Realmente, estamos ante una continuación de Lords of Shadow por mucho que su perspectiva lateral nos haga pensar otra cosa, lo que significa que la acción es la base y la exploración un añadido para aportar variedad. Visto en perspectiva, puede que en su día fuese tratado injustamente, pero una gran parte de culpa vino de las promesas incumplidas que hablaban de su tamaño y posibilidades.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate HD, es un magnifico juego al más puro estilo clásicos de los míticos juegos de la franquicia. Tiene una buena dosis de calidad en todos sus apartados, tanto técnicos como jugables, haciendo con ello las delicias de tantos lo jugadores de toda la vida como los que se atrevan con este por primera vez.

Su paso a la alta definición le ha quedado que ni pintado, y aunque con pocas novedades, sin lugar a duda es una compra muy a tener en cuenta para los que no lo hayan podido disfrutar en la portátil de Nintendo, ya que será de vital importancia argumental para su venidero Castlevania Lords of Shadow II.

Mirror of Fate é um dos melhores títulos já lançados para o Nintendo 3DS e uma excelente entrada da franquia Castlevania.

Mirror of Fate no es un juego aburrido. Y no creo que nadie se aburra jugándolo. Tiene exploración, aunque definitivamente no es un metroidvania. Se juega en 2D, pero no es tampoco un Castlevania clásico. Es rápido y vistoso, pero no es un hack´n slash al uso. Y su historia es entretenida, pero no tiene la potencia del original, y no es nada que no se pueda resumir en dos frases. Parece que, esta vez, MercurySteam ha mordido más de lo que podía masticar, y ha querido beber influencias de tantas fuentes diferentes, que el resultado es un producto `multiusos´:bueno en todo, pero maestro de nada.

En definitiva, si te gusta este tipo de género y sobre todo disfrutaste con la primera entrega de sobremesa, MoF te va a gustar mucho. Puede que no sea el juegazo que todos esperábamos, pero sabe destacar sus virtudes por encima del resto, demostrando una gran seguridad a la hora de desarrollar una obra tan compleja. Además, tened en cuenta que si pensáis disfrutar de la segunda parte de la historia debéis completar antes esta entrega si queréis enteraros de todos sus entresijos y no dejar cabos sueltos. MercurySteam lo ha vuelto a conseguir y desde aquí esperamos con ansia su próximo proyecto.

Mirror of Fate es un buen juego que quizá se ha quedado a unos pasos de la excelencia debido a decisiones en su concepto que sólo desde MercurySteam pueden explicar.

El apartado técnico cumple y brilla pero no deslumbra. En ocasiones los tiempos de carga son largos y muy numerosos, algo que no podemos defender en un título portátil. Su duración nos ha sorprendido, para mal, pues aunque no es corto, se nos prometió mucho más.

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate" é sensacional, uma viciante aventura que traz de volta aquela instigante sensação do mistério e terror que há no desconhecido, além de trazer o triunfante retorno dos personagens já bem conhecidos da franquia Castlevania.

Este Castlevania es un lujo portátil, un título para detenerse entre batalla y batalla para disfrutar del escenario, escuchar la buena música, disfrutar del doblaje (por desgracia sólo en inglés, aunque subtitulado en español). Un título imprescindible para 3DS que levanta un catálogo de juegos que llevaba unos meses de capa caída. Nuestro aplauso para Mercury Steam, que abre camino para otros estudios a nivel internacional al demostrar por segunda vez que lo único que hace falta para que se hagan superproducciones de gran calidad en España es la confianza de los inversores. Mirror of Fate demuestra que hay talento de sobra.

Mirror of Fate é um dos melhores títulos já lançados para o Nintendo 3DS e uma excelente entrada da franquia Castlevania. O jogo possui certos defeitos que podem fazer com que os fãs mais fervorosos e saudosistas torçam o nariz, mas a experiência é tão gratificante, épica e cinematográfica que eu duvido que, mesmo com sua facilidade, o título não agrade a cada um dos jogadores que desejarem se aventurar mais uma vez pelas catacumbas do castelo do vampiro mais famoso de todos os tempos.

Overall, this is a game that will likely divide Castlevania fans. Taken on its own merit we can only recommend this to 3DS owners. It’s a dark and forbidding fairy tale told with skill and it conjures an atmospheric adventure which leads into the darker, more brutal side of the Castlevania universe.

Para o futuro, Mirror of Fate será visto como um Castlevania diferente. Esta versão portátil fica a meio passo do anterior Lords of Shadows, mas também não se afasta totalmente dos títulos clássicos. A MercurySteam quis fazer desta versão um ponto de equilíbrio entre os jogos clássicos e a mais recente aventura para as consolas caseiras e o resultado é uma produção capaz de saciar os desejos dos jogadores que sentem predilecção pela mais recente produção, mas continuam fiéis aos clássicos. Nos contextos primordiais, como plataformas, combate e mecânicas, Mirror of Fate é quase uma oferta única e é isso que se revela essencial quando mergulhamos neste destino cruzado de quatro personagens.

Mieux encore, l’utilisation de la 3DS relief est elle aussi vraiment réussie, avec des champs de profondeur rarement vus dans un jeu 3DS et qui rappellent parfois Super Mario 3D Land. Dommage en revanche que le gameplay ne fasse jamais appel à cet effet d’optique, trop peu exploité depuis la sortie de la 3DS. 

Most importantly though, Mirror of Fate is an excellent entry into this new Castlevania canon. It treats its plot with as much reverence as a home console title, while capturing more of the feel of classic Castlevania than Lords of Shadow. It's an excellent companion piece to Gabriel's first adventure, and a thoughtful, well-designed handheld title in particular.

Como ya pasó con la primera entrega de esta trilogía, Mirror of Fate vuelve a ser un título que destaca por su gran cantidad de contenido, pero también por una serie de mecánicas bien diseñadas, empezando por su gran sistema de combates. El resultado es un título de acción largo, muy completo, y en el que se nota la ambición y el cariño por esta saga clásica. Nos decía Enric Álvarez que "el día que Mercury Steam perdiera su identidad dejarían de trabajar para la industria". Podríamos decir que en esta identidad propia que menciona el director del juego (junto a José Luis Márquez) se encuentra la clave de ese equilibrio tan bien conseguido entre la herencia de una saga veterana como Castlevania y la propia personalidad del estudio que ha resucitado al vampire killer.

Galvanisé par le succès critique et commercial de Lords of Shadow, Mercury Steam poursuit sa brillante réinterprétation de Castlevania à travers Mirror of Fate. A commencer par une narration plus appuyée, dont témoigne la division de l'aventure en plusieurs actes propres à chacun des héros. Cet opus hérite aussi du gameplay tourbillonnant de son aïeul sur console de salon, transposé en 2,5D. Et cette présentation de toute beauté permet également un retour de la plateforme et de l'exploration, preuve que le studio espagnol n'oublie pas les traditions de la saga. Tout juste peut-on regretter une approche trop consensuelle, obtenue à force de compromis pour que tout le monde soit aux anges, des néophytes aux chasseurs de vampires aguerris. Certains y verront d'ailleurs un manque de profondeur, voire d'âme, notamment les fans les plus intégristes qui ne démordent pas de la recette d'autrefois. Mais si le studio n'avait pas planté profondément ses canines dans la saga en se la réappropriant de la sorte, il y aurait de quoi se faire du mauvais sang pour son avenir, qu'incarne désormais Lords of Shadow avec une prestance admirable. Et sans doute serait-elle morte à petit feu, un comble pour une histoire de vampire.

A huge thrill-a-minute adventure, with satisfying combat, and big boss fights. Just don't expect the old Metroidvania formula.

Although the 2D perspective and Metroidvania-style features call to mind past classics, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate shouldn’t be directly compared to previous games in Konami’s long-running vampire-hunting series, because it tries to do things a little differently. While elements of exploration and item collection remain, they are drastically scaled back when compared to the likes of Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow — which could be a positive or a negative, depending on your personal taste. Instead, MercurySteam’s vision of Castlevania is built around a deep combat engine which tries to make each and every enemy encounter a rewarding and challenging experience. Factor in some impressive visuals, gorgeous music and taxing boss battles — not to mention a fantastic story and more replay value than you might at first imagine — and you’ve got a game which can stand proud in the Castlevania bloodline. Sometimes, a little change is a good thing.

Auf dem 3DS ist der Neustart der Serie weitaus weniger gelungen als vor wenigen  Jahren auf den HD-Konsolen - zumal ich mit der Inszenierung nicht warm werde. Wobei der Absturz, der sich nach den ersten vier Stunden angedeutet hatte, durch die gut inszenierte Action im Stile des "großen" Lords of Shadow noch spürbar aufgefangen wird. Doch die Rückbesinnung auf alte Tugenden geht für meinen Geschmack etwas zu weit - zurück in die Ära vor Symphony of  the Night, als die zweidimensionalen Castlevanias nur wenige Rätsel und noch weniger Rollenspielelemente hatten. Der Fokus auf Kämpfe erinnert in dieser Form aber eher an ein zweidimensionales God of War als an einen modernen Vertreter einer Reihe, die Synonym für ein komplettes Subgenre des zweidimensionalen Action-Adventures geworden ist. Während die Technik mit detaillierten Texturen, ausgefeiltem Gegner- sowie Leveldesign sowie visuell interessantem Einsatz der 3D-Technologie durch die Bank überzeugt, bleiben die Mechaniken abseits der Kämpfe häufig zu oberflächlich und schaffen es daher nur selten, das anspruchsvolle Castlevania-Gefühl zu vermitteln, das man mit den mobilen Vorgängern assoziiert.

Casltevania:  Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is dan wel een vervolg op het origineel, wat erg goed was, maar weet helaas niet de schoenen van deze game te vullen. De game is echter wel bloedmooi en speelt heerlijk weg. Op sommige momenten is de game wat pittig, maar het wordt nooit té moeilijk. Eigenlijk heeft de game als enige grote nadeel dat het verhaal zo dunnetjes voortkabbelt op het origineel en dat er niet meer gekozen kan worden welke upgrades er gekocht worden. Mirror of Fate is, ondanks de gebreken die de game kent, echter zeker een aanrader voor de 3DS-bezitter.

Eigenlijk doet Mirror of Fate nauwelijks iets verkeerd, maar het doet vooral ook heel weinig bovengemiddeld goed. Alle onderdelen staan in dienst van een verhaal dat zich schuldig maakt aan plichtverzuim. Het is deels Lords of Shadow met een perfect geïntegreerd, diepgaand vechtsysteem, maar dat hoef je nergens in zijn volle glorie te gebruiken. Het is deels Metroidvania, al mis je die exploratiedrang doordat upgrades weinig waarde hebben. Wanneer je Mirror of Fate de spiegel voorhoudt, mist de game vooral een heldere uitwerking van een verzameling goede ideeën. Daarmee biedt de game een vertroebelde visie op de kracht van de Lords of Shadow-formule.

Come anticipato in apertura, se si analizza con occhio critico Mirror of Fate è innegabile che ci si trovi dinanzi ad un gioco di buon livello, avvincente nel suo sistema di combattimento e moderno in molte sue meccaniche, che si candida al ruolo di prima scelta in ambito action su Nintendo 3DS; eppure, senza andare troppo indietro, coloro che hanno conosciuto la serie nelle sue incarnazioni su Nintendo DS, innamorandosene perdutamente, troveranno che quello che manca è forse più importante di quello che c’è.

I novizi, che hanno seguito Gabriel nel suo viaggio verso l’oscuro su console da salotto, si sentiranno invece perfettamente a casa ed è soprattutto a loro che l’acquisto è consigliato.

El juego intenta convencernos que es un Metroidvania cuando en realidad es bastante lineal. Y ojo, no estoy diciendo que un tipo de jugabilidad sea mejor que la otra, sino que sería necesario establecer claramente una u otra, en lugar de mezclar algunos conceptos que a la larga resultan innecesarios o intrascendentes. Temas como el subir de nivel quedan rápidamente relegados a un segundo plano dada su limitada importancia, y parece introducido más por complacer a cierto sector de jugadores que para apoyar realmente a la jugabilidad.

Salvando estos pequeños huecos –que obviamente son totalmente subjetivos- el título encaja perfectamente en la trama de la saga y ofrece una visión del clan Belmont que nunca antes habíamos contemplado con tanto detalle. Además volvemos a ver a nuestro querido Alucard, así que a nivel argumental poco más podemos pedir.

En definitiva, ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD’ es una buena actualización y conversión digna de jugar siempre y cuando no hayamos disfrutado de la versión portátil lanzada a principios de año como exclusiva para Nintendo 3DS. La adaptación ha perdido alguna de las características propias de la plataforma, pero sigue dejándose jugar -y sobre todo sigue divirtiendo-, y seguramente encantará a los seguidores de la serie que pretendan continuar con la trama de ‘Lords of Shadow’ hasta el lanzamiento de su segunda parte. 

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate es un gran juego, pero áspero en más ocasiones de lo deseable. Si uno es capaz de lidiar con el sistema de autoguardado, las secuencias de video, la predecible historia y las 10 horas de duración media se encuentra con una más que digna entrega portátil de Lords of Shadow que, sin abandonar su subsaga, no carece de personalidad propia. Además, luce impresionante en la diminuta pantalla de 3DS y exhibe todos sus encantos visto en 3D. Con la última rebaja poniéndolo a 25 € hay pocas excusas para no comprar la versión portátil y es que, no nos engañemos, este juego fue evidentemente diseñado para 3DS, las - casi inexistentes - mejoras que aporta la versión HD no justifican el sacrificio.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate HD funciona. Rememora ciertos elementos de los Castlevania del pasado manteniendo el espíritu que los españoles MercurySteam otorgaron a la saga hace ya tres años. Es corto y sencillo, pero os dejará buen sabor de boca, tal vez incluso a los más puristas si sabéis ver el encanto de esa fusión de la que os hablamos. En PlayStation 3 y Xbox 360 pierde en espectacularidad, en vistosidad… pero no en jugabilidad, pues os ofrece lo mejor de un Castlevania, algo de exploración y plataformeo, monstruos de todo tipo, varias habilidades y por supuesto un Vampire-Killer con el que matarlos. Además nos viene genial para quitarle el óxido al Vampire-Killer antes de la llegada de Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 en PlayStation 3 y Xbox 360. ¡Oye! Hemos conseguido analizar el juego sin decir que en realidad Drácula es…...

Concluindo, MoF é um bom jogo e um título de ação competente, mas que pode decepcionar fãs que estão acostumados com a fórmula Metroidvania, iniciada em Symphony of the Night e que foi predominante nos jogos do Nintendo DS. MoF possui sua identidade própria, mas que se tivesse explorado melhor alguns de seus conceitos poderia ter sido um título muito melhor. Espero ver esses conceitos expandidos e explorados com um outro jogo da série, seja em LoS2 ou em outros títulos futuros. 

Finally, the graphics are lovely for a 2D platformer. The camera zooms in and out to follow the action, like when you’re punching your way out of a rat or viewing the whole level before having to work out the puzzle. The voices are as campy and awful as the villains, but this may be considered a good thing. Castlevania: Mirror of Fate is stupid in a good way and robust enough to be an enjoyable challenge. While the boss battles go on a bit too long and the plot is bonkers, it’s a good use of a platforming style often forgotten.

All things considered, Mirror of Fate is still a decent game, one that is merely injured by some elements of poor design. It’s a unique approach to rebooting a franchise, one that doesn’t seek to reestablish the rules, but instead utilize them as a guide, thus allowing this new version to travel its own direction.

Although Mirror of Fate doesn't live up to its full potential, it often comes close. I can see the beginnings of a fantastic new-school Castlevania experience trying hard to emerge here, and with just a little more polish and precision, MercurySteam would have turned out a solid winner. It's not yet fully evolved, but the work done here is still a valid step towards the future state of this ever-changing series.

In trying to distance itself a little bit from the formula that 2D Metroidvanias have now stuck to for the past 15 years, Mirror of Fate succeeded in most areas but falls a little bit too short in others. The new, more action-oriented kind of gameplay is a pleasant experience, but lack of variety of weapons and super powers makes it a less versatile experience. Had the game been a bit longer, which we cannot help but wish it was, it would have felt too repetitive. Exploration is still there in decent quantity, yet the lack of secret "off the map" rooms to find by yourself make the experience a bit too straightforward for its own good, despite 3D graphics lending themselves pretty well to render destructible things hiding interesting secrets within the castle. Finally, while the story certainly is interesting in its own right, the Lords of Shadow sub series stabs long time fans in the back by throwing away all of the plot points established by the 25-year-old series. What remains is a great looking game that controls well and is still very much worth experiencing, but is still more easily recommended to newcomers and people who can forget what the series has established so far - at least for the time Mirror of Fate will last them - and look past the minor hiccoughs in the execution. The demo available, unfortunately, doesn't really give off an accurate representation of what playing the full game - unlocking new powers as progress is made and exploring progressively - feels like.

Though the jumping, climbing and swinging may feel awkwardly moored by the engine and the dark atmosphere, this batch of Belmonts brings an appropriate heft to combat. As a challenging companion to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate is just about worth its weight in subtitles.

Detta är extra tråkigt med tanke på alla de fantastiska jättemonster som fått bita i ovigd jord i dussintals tidigare Castlevania-spel, men det vore ovärdigt att runda av en text om ett spel som faktiskt blandar tradition och nytänkande med gott resultat, via ett klagomål. För om sanningen ska fram ser jag hellre fler vågade försök än bekväma, traditionsbundna Castlevania också i framtiden.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate (questo il lunghissimo titolo completo della produzione Konami) è un discreto action game, lontano però dall'eccellenza del suo predecessore. Il passaggio allo scorrimento bidimensionale avrebbe probabilmente richiesto un lavoro più attento sul combat system, che risulta invece abbastanza basilare e, sulle prime, anche poco ispirato. I guizzi del titolo si avvertono proprio nel momento in cui l'anima action lascia il centro della scena alle sequenze esplorative tipiche di un buon adventure game. Salvo poi ritornare durante i boss fight, con risultati anche discreti. Nonostante un inizio sottotono, grazie alla presenza di tre protagonisti in fondo molto diversi fra loro il titolo riesce a creare un'ottima progressione, inchiodando l'appassionato della saga di fronte ai piccoli schermi del Nintendo 3DS.

Mancano le rifiniture: un sistema ruolistico interessante, un backtracking meglio congegnato, aree del castello maggiormente ispirate dal punto di vista artistico e stilistico. Però in Mirror of Fate c'è una buona varietà, qualche sequenza davvero ostica e, sul finire dell'avventura, anche una discreta quantità di solidissimi momenti action. Il lavoro sulla continuity di Castlevania, molto coraggioso, sfida le convinzioni dei fan e riesce ad espandere l'universo di Lords of Shadow.

Dit korte verhaal van Mirror of Fate lang maken, legt de focus vooral op wat het nieuwste deel niet is. De rijke historie van Castlevania kan onmogelijk volledig geflecteerd worden in dit nieuwe deel. Mercury Steam heeft geen Metroidvania gemaakt, noch een klassieke zoals die op de NES. De studio levert het Lords of Shadow-format af op broekzakformaat en dat is ergens pure fanservice. Liefhebbers mogen zo van het lange wachten tot LoS 2 een goede acht uur aftrekken, nieuwkomers hebben er een heerlijke actieplatformer bij ; oudgedienden kunnen DS-game Order of Ecclesia nog gewoon op hun 3DS spelen. Het voelt alleen een beetje leeg soms. Zoals wanneer Dracula in de spiegel staart.

Eppure Mirror of Fate ha troppa buona volontà per essere bocciato. Prova talmente tanto a essere il miglior Castlevania di sempre, e riesce ad azzeccare anche dei gran bei momenti e delle belle sequenze di gioco. Mette sul piatto un gusto per il mostruoso e il grottesco che riesce a coniugarsi bene col passato della serie e, nel frattempo, può godere di una colonna sonora orchestrale davvero di grandissima fattura.

Tout n’est pas parfait mais pour un premier essai portable, Mercury Steam ne déçoit pas en réussissant à transposer le battle system du premier Lords of Shadow sur Nintendo 3DS. L’exploration 2.5D mélangée aux boss fights et à l’effet 3D s’avère grisante, et que les joueurs en manque de défis ne s’inquiètent pas une seule seconde : Castlevania Mirror of Fate offrira aussi son lot de challenges. Explorer le château de Dracula cachera parfois une certaine difficulté mais n’ayez crainte, le jeu en vaudra (généralement) la chandelle. Dommage que les environnements parcourus et le bestiaire ne soient pas plus variés et que l’aspect personnalisation des précédents volets n’ait pas inspiré plus que ça l’équipe de développement. Au final, voilà un périple solide qui remplit sa mission : nous faire patienter avant l’épisode qui viendra clore la trilogie Lords of Shadow !

These complaints ultimately make Castlevania: Lords of Shadow- Mirror of Fate disposable and just short of being considered a classic, but so long as you except the game for what it is, you'll most likely have a zombie-whipping good time.

All told, Mirror of Fate is a fun and occasionally challenging action game with successful elements and an unfortunate, but small, selection of poor design choices. By taking liberties with the series' lore, it opens the door for an exciting conclusion to the Lords of Shadow timeline. Had some of the inconsistencies in gameplay been ironed out, the experience would have felt much more cohesive, but as it stands, Mirror of Fate is a good, but not great, addition to the historic Castlevania series.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate si è quindi rivelato un buon capitolo della serie. Rispetto agli episodi per Nintendo DS perde una struttura collaudata, una colonna sonora memorabile e il ricchissimo bestiario creato e arricchito in tanti anni di storia, ma in cambio offre un'interessante narrazione generazionale basata su episodi perfettamente incastrati tra loro, tipi differenti di gameplay a seconda del personaggio utilizzato e un sistema di combattimento ricco e versatile.

Much like its title, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow — Mirror of Fate plays with multiple concepts attempting to garner widespread appeal, but would be better suited focusing on just one. Still, MercurySteam clearly understands how to design a sidescroller, with Mirror of Fate featuring a huge map packed with content that recalls some of the better level design in the series. If one can get past the insipid visuals and derivative combat, there’s a fine adventure here that acts as a primer for the franchise’s continued viability on Nintendo’s handheld.

Three times the protagonists gives you three times the number of toys and an engaging, if thoroughly convoluted, story, but it’s not without cost. What Simon, Trevor and Alucard give to the mechanics and narrative they take from its flow: you still feel gated, even when you’ve got all the gear. It’s a deflating discovery, but few games save their disappointments for their endgames. And Mirror Of Fate, like Lords Of Shadow before it, feels like Castlevania, but carves out a likeable identity of its own.

Stones, crenellations, laboratories! Castlevania, for all its moody horrors, has always been a comforting sort of experience, and while Mirror of Fate might willingly fumble the classic structure somewhat, it's still got a touch of that familiar vampire-hunting charm to it - a charm that comes to the rescue whenever the developer's invention or polish fall short. This 3DS outing can't match the smart assurance of the first Lords of Shadow, then, but it remains a decent action game with some lovely art to keep it chugging along. It's something of a makeweight, as handheld games far too frequently are - but there's just enough here to satisfy until the true follow-up to Lords of Shadows is ready.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate decepcionará a los que esperaban un nuevo Castlevania en 2D de los de siempre, pero hará pasar un buen rato a los que les gustó Lords of Shadow. Y si no tenéis 3DS, os recuerdo que hace poco han lanzado una versión en HD para las consolas de sobremesa, aunque no sé hasta que punto el juego lucirá menos en pantalla grande y sin 3D.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow – Mirror Of Fate no es un juego clásico al uso, sino una actualización del juego de toda la vida. La exploración es bastante limitada y no hay muchos incentivos para recorrer todos los recovecos, aunque no son muchos. El escenario podría haberse aprovechado un poco más, porque viendo cómo son algunas salas te quedas pensando en la maravilla que se podría haber hecho.

Pero no es un mal juego, de hecho me ha gustado bastante. ¿Gustará a los fans de toda la vida? Pues sinceramente no veo por qué no. No será perfecto ni será un IGAvania, pero es bastante entretenido y el saber cómo seguía la historia de Lords of Shadow a mí me ha resultado interesante.

¿Es Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate HD un mal juego? Por supuesto que no. Por desgracia, la experiencia se ve lastrada por un aspecto técnico algo flojo ya que fue pensado para una consola con menor potencia pero con efecto 3D en mente. ¿Si yo lo recomendaría? Pues sí, ya que nos podrá entretener durante un buen puñado de horas y nos hará más corta la espera a Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2, el fin de la trilogía ideada por Mercury Steam.

No obstante estas «sombras» en el apartado técnico no deberían ser impedimento para disfrutar de un gran título que, a nivel jugable, está muy bien concebido y es divertido. Aparte de ser el nexo de unión entre Lords of Shadow y su secuela, que también es un punto a favor para los que quieran jugar la trilogía al completo, este juego sería igualmente recomendable si no formase parte de esta saga. Y es que Mirror of Fate tiene mimbres más que necesarios para despuntar en su género, y eso ya es mucho decir a su favor.

 MercurySteam would learn from their mistakes in later games and would eventually land a bull’s-eye with Metroid Dread. With Mirror of Fate, gamers can get an idea where the developer was heading and can see the beginnings of where their best ideas were coming from.

Scordatevi i Castlevania di GBA e Nintendo DS, riprendete quelli di NES e SNES, aggiungeteci Lords of Shadow e avrete questo Mirror of Fate. Infatti, questo episodio della serie LoS unisce platform e action e abbandona la componente rpg delle serie, riscrivendo completamente le storie dei protagonisti e creando intrecci che mai vi sareste aspettati. Purtroppo queste caratteristiche potrebbero non piacere ai fan delle precedenti versioni e una semplificazione del gameplay potrebbe non attirare gli hardcore gamer, anche se il livello di sfida si attesta comunque su buoni livelli. Impressionante il 3D e avvincenti i fatti narrati. A voi la scelta!

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD wurde beinahe eins zu eins von der Konsole auf den PC übertragen und läuft flüssig sowie in angenehmer Auflösung. Auch die Tastatursteuerung ist überraschend eingängig. Trotzdem sollten PC-Fans eigentlich mehr erwarten dürfen, wie etwa einstellbare Sound- und Grafikoptionen, die komplett fehlen. Abgesehen von der Auflösung und der Helligkeit dürft ihr nämlich nicht entscheiden, wie die Schnetzelei aussehen soll. Wer eine PS3 oder X360 besitzt, hat keinen Grund, zur PC-Version zu greifen. Andererseits werdet ihr für rund 12 Euro auch 10 Stunden lang unterhalten. Dass es aber weitaus schönere HD-Remakes gibt, steht außer Frage.

Pour finir, le mot qui nous reste à l’esprit lorsque l’on joue à Mirror of Fate est : potentiel. Car le titre en est réellement gorgé, c’est un plaisir de retrouver l’action et l'esprit proposés dans Lords of Shadow premier du nom, sur 3DS. Cependant, certains aspects de ce Mirror of Fate n’ont pas été assez travaillés et entâchent l’expérience de jeu. Bon départ pour Mercury Steam sur version portable de Castlevania, mais pas excellent.

Einen Vorteil bringt Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD mit sich: Endlich läuft das Spiel komplett flüssig, zudem ist es nun vergleichsweise günstig zu haben. Grafisch bleibt der Titel, wie zu erwarten, hinter den Möglichkeiten zurück. Trotz höherer Auflösung merkt man dem Spiel seine 3DS-Vergangenheit zu jeder Zeit an. Der neue Boss-Rush-Modus, Ranglisten und Achievements sind gegenüber dem Original eine nette Dreingabe – mehr aber auch nicht. Wer eine klassische Castlevania-Erfahrung aus NES- oder Super-Nintendo-Tagen sucht, wird hier definitiv fündig. Die Klasse eines Symphony of the Night oder späterer 2-D-Ableger bleibt aber auch in der HD-Neuauflage unerreicht.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate macht es einem nicht leicht. Es brilliert mit einem komplexeren Kampfsystem und spinnt die Geschichte rund um die Belmont-Familie interessant weiter. Hier werden deutlich die Puristen unter den Fans angesprochen, da es den ganzen Rollenspielballast und Erkundungstrieb auf ein Mindestmaß reduziert. Gerade das wird für viel Diskussionsstoff unter den Fans von Castlevania: Symphony of the Night und Co. sorgen. Für mich persönlich ist und bleibt die Reduzierung auf den eigentlichen Kern des Spiels der größte Kritikpunkt, da es dem Titel dadurch spürbar an Abwechslung fehlt. Das nicht ganz flüssige Spielgeschehen in Kombination mit dem im Vergleich geringeren Umfang und der langsameren Spielgeschwindigkeit führt dann insgesamt dazu, dass Mirror of Fate nicht ganz das hohe Niveau der direkten 2-D-Vorgänger erreicht.

Passage plus ou moins réussi de la saga Lords of Shadow sur 3DS. On est face à une réalisation soignée mais pas forcément pour tout. Comme je le répète plusieurs fois durant le test, c'est parfois très inégal. Par contre, soyons d'accord, nous ne sommes pas devant un mauvais jeu pour autant. Il reste un soft très sympathique même si finalement il déçoit un peu par rapport aux attentes. J'ai tout de même été scotché et j'ai pris plaisir à le parcourir. J'aurais pas forcément voulu un énième Metroidvania de la Team Iga d'une durée de vie de 4h à la place. Bon, MercurySteam, il va falloir essayer de corriger le tir avec une suite sur 3DS ! Je ne demande que ça !

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate è purtroppo un gioco discreto e nulla più. Una valutazione che certamente non è condizionata dai paragoni coi precedenti capitoli bidimensionali della serie diretti da Igarashi; siamo noi stessi convinti, pur amando molto gli episodi classici, che il franchise Konami dovesse necessariamente cambiare e trasformarsi in qualcosa di diverso, anche su portatili. Il lavoro di MercurySteam è però afflitto da numerose problematiche, è benché sia evidente l'impegno e la passione nella realizzazione, è perennemente assente il senso di qualità e l'attenzione per il dettaglio che contraddistingue i grandi giochi da quelli divertenti e nulla più. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate è un titolo che scorre via senza picchi e acuti, che si gioca con piacere ma che non lascia praticamente nulla una volta completato. Peccato.

Mirror of Fate leaves a poor first impression, but the game gradually becomes more enjoyable as you move through it. The game takes time out to puzzle near the halfway point for a welcome change of pace, and has its best moments coming at the end of the game, which you can reach in around ten hours. Taking on the form of what most players associate with classic Castlevania, Mirror of Fate seems to stumble around in an unfamiliar body. It’s at least playable if not always enjoyable, and the game wants so badly to be Castlevania that it manages to tell an interesting tale and in the end.

Overall, Mirror of Fate is not a bad game, but not really a good one either. It feels like an odd mesh of classic Castlevania, Symphony of the Night, and Lords of Shadow, and like any jack of all trades, it masters none of these elements. It’s also a fairly short game (I beat it in eight hours and got 100% completion in 10) with limited replayability, which makes it hard to recommend at full retail price. Mirror of Fate is fun enough for what it is, but if, like me, you’re waiting for the next great Metroidvania game, the wait continues.

MercurySteam has attempted to take the success of their console Castlevania reboot, Lords of Shadow, and blend it with the more old-school legacy of previous portable releases in the franchise. The result is Mirror of Fate—a game that redefines our expectations for a handheld Castlevania in a number of positive ways, but which also, unfortunately, tries to fix other elements that simply weren’t broken.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is a game that tries to take the best of both new and old Castlevania but ultimately comes up short all round. The segmented exploration and redundant levelling up won’t please fans of the older titles and the combat isn’t deep enough to learn all of the combos for how rarely you may want to attempt something beyond mashing buttons. Ignoring the staples of the series however the game is quite enjoyable throughout its eight-hour campaign, but doesn’t offer any compelling reason to return to the game once completed. 

Was letzten Endes dennoch bleibt, ist ein über alle vier Charaktere recht passables Actionspiel mit leider zu seichter Erkundung, das die Fiktion des Reboots ganz ansprechend, wenngleich ein bisschen verwirrend mit der Historie der Reihe verknüpft. Wäre Mirror of Fate zwischen Portrait of Ruin und Order of Ecclesia herausgekommen, es würde sich heute wohl niemand mehr daran erinnern. No matter how you look at it Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is disappointing. On its own the game is mediocre with a missed opportunity in character variety, short time to completion, and only a small amount of enemies. Compared to past games this is a downright disaster. In trying to appeal to both the action focused Lords of Shadow crowd and the traditional “Metroidvania” fans, Mirror of Fate looks like a Castlevania title but feels like something else altogether. Best case scenario the Lords of Shadow brand has a long and successful life on the consoles while the 3DS continues the lineage of excellence left behind from the previous handheld Castlevanias.

The way Konami blends 2D and 3D Castlevania elements forces the franchise into very modern waters, away from the tried-and-true "whoops, the castle is mirrored now" and "head back 20 minutes after a boss" formula. It's not a total failure of the brand, but Mirror of Fate comes up short often enough to be disappointing for anyone heading into it with expectations based on recent 2D entries.

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow - Mirror Of Fate is an ambitious title with great boss battles, wonderful visuals and intuitive combat, making it a good fit for the Nintendo 3DS.

But it won't be to everybody's taste. The narrative is underwhelming, and with its relatively straightforward ten-hour campaign focusing on action rather than exploration, fans of the series' RPG elements will be disappointed.

For all the risks Mirror of Fate takes in terms of story and aesthetic, its core gameplay feels mired in antiquated design that just doesn’t feel that relevant anymore. This castle may look elaborate and multilayered, but the foundations it rests on are shaky. What could’ve been an entirely new avenue for the franchise feels more like a dead end.

Sympathique distraction pour les joueurs ne possédant qu'une 3DS, il fera office de digestif appréciable pour ceux qui attendent de mordre dans Lords of Shadow 2 à pleines dents.

For this entry into the series, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a fun ride and will take you some time to accomplish. It also looks good, especially for being on a handheld, and will provide you with more of the Belmont history than you could find on Ancestry.com, just don’t expect your brain to think the words Castlevania while you play it. If you know this going into the game you will find yourself enjoying this adventure more for what it is, instead of what it isn’t.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is not the fusion of old and new Castlevania designs that was teased; it merely cements MercurySteam's ambition to keep the Lords of Shadow sub-series as distant from the main branch as possible. Not the worst thing in the world, but still quite disappointing.

There's something almost clever about how rigidly Mirror of Fate sticks to its name. It's a reflection: reversed repetition of the same tricks and plot twists employed to greater effect in 2010's Lords of Shadow; a muddied misunderstanding of the structure and design of Castlevanias past. Mirror of Fate fails to build an identity of its own, but more damningly it fails to create a believable likeness of its lineage.

The greatest shame with Mirror of Fate is that its heart is in the right place. As far as I can tell, MercurySteam did its absolute best to chart its own course with handheld Castlevania, one that borrows from the greatness that came before it, but without copying it outright. But in going off the beaten path, the studio ended up diluting what has made Castlevania so great in the last 15 years. Its emphasis on fragmented exploration and shallow leveling is the exact opposite of what Castlevania fans like myself love, want and have come to expect.
