In all, Sword of the Necromancer is a fun roguelite with a heartfelt story. The usage of the titular blade adds a whole new layer to the roguelite genre, in that gamers will need to strategize about what enemies to take out first in order to have them fight on their side. If the genre interests you but you need a good story to feel at all invested, then this game is for you.

Overall, Sword of the Necromancer is a rewarding roguelike that not only puts women in front and center of the game, but their love for one another is what fuels the game’s very existence. It’s the perfect blend of dungeon crawler and visual novel, and I sincerely hope that Grimorio of Games continues to create such rich, and fulfilling games like this one.

Excelente.

Sword of the Necromancer is a gem of a game. While visually it can look a little repetitive, the game is honestly a ton of fun. I think this one may be a game people remember for a long time.

While complaints can be leveled at Sword of the Necromancer based on repetition, that doesn’t mean that it’s bad. In fact, it’s enjoyable and recommended. Sure, Supergiant Games’ Hades devours this title’s lunch in that it’s a superior action rogue-like with great story. Barring that, Grimorio of Games built a fun and interesting dungeon crawler that’s deeper than it appears at first glance. The tale behind the stabbing is interesting and heartfelt, drawing the player further into the depths of the dungeon, while the action is exciting. An expansion to add more level and boss variety would go a long way to making this required playing, but anyone interested in this type of game should give this Sword of the Necromancer a swing.

Sword of the Necromancer is a solid Rogue-Lite action RPG title that has a clever resurrection mechanic, but otherwise doesn’t do much new and different. That said, what Sword of the Necromancer does, it does pretty well and makes it one of the more enjoyable enters into the genre.

Sword of the Necromancer is a game that will scratch a very particular itch for fans of rogue-lite experiences that feature more narrative than the genre is known for. The gameplay mechanics deliver one cool idea, the monster resurrection, but fail to make full use of it, especially when players need to deal with bosses or the more capable enemies of later levels. I wanted the game to give me more reasons to use the monsters I revived, to understand them, to build strategies around the ones I chose to carry around.

Although Sword of the Necromancer has a number of unequivocal blemishes, the core concept of summoning fallen creatures and having them fight alongside you is rather compelling. Fortunately, Grimorio of Games seems responsive to player feedback, and has already added an optional bag to assist with inventory management. If the team can work on AI pathfinding, Sword of the Necromancer might not be sorcery, but does have its charms.

Sword of the Necromancer is a fun roguelike, with a unique enemy revival system that sets it apart from other titles in the genre. Unfortunately, a lacklustre combat system and unoriginal story mean that it doesn't quite match up to the absolute best roguelikes out there.

Overall, what Sword of the Necromancer may lack when it comes to a unique visual design and level variety, it makes up for with the narrative hook and satisfying monster-summoning combat. Whether you’re hacking your way through your foes using weapons or a carefully selected menagerie of monsters, combat feels good and you’re only ever one boss away from more story content. With player-assists now available for those who would prefer a tough hack-and-slash experience, and several upgrades that improve the flow of the roguelike experience, it’s easier to progress without long slogs between new narrative beats. Make no mistake, it’s still a tough game that’ll punish you for reckless play, but the gameplay now feels more in line with the developers narrative ambitions.

Sword of the Necromancer is a neat, engaging, and surprising rogue-like with some great ideas and a curiously deep narrative. The mechanic of reviving enemies to fight for you is a great concept, and general features like diverse weapons and effective combat maneuvers feel superb, however, this strange inventory design feels like a huge setback. The inclusion of the latest update which allows for a more customized experience is an improvement, but it did sour my enjoyment of the game just a little to not have it from launch. As it stands, you can’t really let yourself get attached to anything other than the titular sword which directly contradicts the key point of the narrative; that Tama has grown attached to Koko. If you are looking for a nice, light rogue-like to jump into that doesn’t feel mindless, this is the game for you.

And that’s how I feel about Sword of the Necromancer overall: unsatisfied. While its queer twist on a usually heteronormative story deserves to be recognised, the game is let down by not letting the new ideas come to fruition. It feels like I received a bouquet of violets, but instead of them being fresh and in-bloom, they are already wilting. With just a few tweaks, the bouquet could revitalise into a fun roguelike, and while it’s overall a serviceable experience, there’s really no reason to go back once you have the true ending, if you don’t feel tired out before then.

Sword of the Necromancer is undoubtedly built upon a solid foundation but it lacks the level of complexity necessary for repeated playthroughs that its predecessors and colleagues have in spades. With a needlessly repetitive storyline and an extremely limited inventory, this rogue-like relies too heavily on faulty AI that renders revived monster allies helpless while doing little to facilitate alternate playstyles. Sword of the Necromancer is visually pleasing and functionally operable, but I question its longevity when compared to current industry standards.

Sword of the Necromancer has some neat ideas on show in its dungeon-crawling gameplay, but it felt a little bit too basic to offer that much excitement. What doesn’t help is the restricted item limit, which often made it difficult to justify reviving monsters and having them fight beside you… you know, the coolest feature of the game.

Sword of the Necromancer includes a love story with queer characters who can revive monsters to fight alongside, a good variety of items, randomized senarios, and options to customize difficulty, with the promise of adding more content in the near future. Although it doesn’t shine brightly in any aspect, it does a fair job in all departments and proves that crowdfunded campaigns can work.

To enjoy Sword of the Necromancer requires you to be invested in the narrative, but to do that, you’ll have to get through gameplay that lacks many refinements that a roguelike needs. The system of bringing monsters back alive to fight for you is limited because you have to manage only four slots of items, which often shadows the game’s most unique systems. As charming as this game looks, it doesn’t ever become a challenging adventure or an interesting experience.

Sword of the Necromancer feels more like a proof of concept than a full-fledged experience. The idea of using former enemies as allies is a great one, but its shoddy execution and lack of content hamstrings that premise quickly. People who are looking for another exciting roguelike game after finishing Hades should keep on looking, as Sword of the Necromancer doesn't live up to the potential of its one great gimmick.

With nothing to offer besides some pleasant storytelling, we cannot recommend Sword of the Necromancer on any meaningful level. It’s not horrible, but it’s bereft of both meaningful content and any manner of unique execution. A sequel or heavily-modified relaunch could salvage the game into something much stronger, as the core idea of resurrecting fallen monsters is a decent one, but its treatment here renders it irrelevant. What a shame. This could have been something special. It's not a complete and total disaster – occasionally, when the screen is a little busier, you might feel a flicker of engagement as you dash between combatants – but overall, we'll be leaving this one for dead.
