This is where Runaway benefits from being an older game. Walkthroughs are easy to find online, and I would never have met my review deadline without them. If you like the puzzles, you can while away a lot of hours solving them. But it’s a measure of how strong Runaway’s story and characters are that you can enjoy the game even when the puzzles are solved for you.

A badly dubbed point-and-click that at least packs the artwork to get you in the mood for the next Broken Sword - but it's not the main event

All that being said, though, Runaway does a great job of scratching that old adventure game itch. If players have some reverence for that genre, or are just interested in seeing a modern re-creation of the exact mechanics that made those games what they were, Runaway is a quality get. Its story is engaging enough to keep players experimenting with items, and the game does a good job of looking like a "great looking" older game. Just don't expect mind-blowing gameplay, maybe keep a walkthrough handy, and stay patient to have the ideal experience.

Ultimately, Runaway: A Road Adventure is a beautiful looking, average sounding, and at times, many times, frustrating experience. It's a worthy addition to the collection if you're into the old 'point and click' and it certainly isn't bad… just keep in mind that it has a lot of flaws, some to do with the original design, some to do with the transition to mobile devices.

So, skip Runaway: A Road Adventure. Skip the silly animation and voice acting. Skip the long and drawn out story. Skip the pixel hunting and instead treat yourself to other adventure games on the iOS. There are plenty around, so just take your pick and run away with that one instead.
