A unique and excellent adventure, with puzzles and mystery at every turn. Although its main appeal will be to retro gamers, there are enough strong qualities to attract those who may not normally play within this genre. Graphics and soundtrack are charming and a joy to experience.

Una aventura increíble que mezcla géneros con maestría sin complicarse en exceso por el camino, hasta el punto de casi convertirse en un clásico instantáneo de esos que 'tienes que jugar'. Y todo ello con un presupuesto muy limitado y con un precio casi irrisorio.

The Count Lucanor heeft mij op overtuigende manier weten te verrassen. De unieke sfeer, puzzels, personages en stijl laten zien dat de ontwikkelaars erg goed over dit spel hebben nagedacht. De titel promoot een onconventionele aanpak en daagt je uit zelf na te denken. Bovendien leidt je avontuur je tot verschillende eindes. De puzzels zitten kwalitatief sterk in elkaar, evenals de sfeer en personages van deze spellen. Je zult constant geboeid blijven en verder spelen, op je eigen manier. Helaas ontbreken de achievements in de Nintendo Switch-versie, maar dat maakt je dwalingen in het kasteel van Lucanor niet minder de moeite waard.

Salvo que tengan algún problema personal con las historias de terror o los cuentos de hadas, no hay excusa para saltearse esta joyita indie. Si el precio les resulta excesivo (actualmente está 10 USD en Steam), esperen a conseguirlo de oferta o a través de un bundle, pero mantenganlo bajo su radar. Es uno de esos juegos para apagar las luces, ponerse los auriculares, hacer doble clic, y pasarla bien pasándola mal. 

The Count Lucanor is definitely worth a place in your Switch eShop library. Comprising a castle of a range of different puzzle challenges in each room, it's like a scarier version of the Crystal Maze. Well-written storytelling also helps its case, and while it may not be long, it certainly is memorable.

Si quieres sentir tensión, y vivir una gran aventura en este castillo alocado, os recomendamos el juego enormemente. Sobretodo porque para ser un juego de 14,99€ vale mucho la pena jugarlo

The Count Lucanor è una meravigliosa esperienza videoludica di gran pregio, una storia narrata splendidamente che ha come unico difetto la longevità "aggravata" dalla bellezza della storia che i ragazzi di Baroque Decay sono stati in grado di creare: quando la macabra (ed educativa) avventura di Hans termina, si vorrebbe continuare a giocare per scoprire altre storie, altri misteri, altre emozioni. Un sistema di controllo basilare ed efficate, un'atmosfera da brivido condita con alcuni spunti di fiabe per bambini ed una direzione artistica superlativa (in particolar modo la pixel art) creano qualcosa di veramente magnifico, un racconto psico-horror bambinesco che tutti dovrebbero vivere almeno una volta nella propria vita videoludica.

El juego peca en algunas mecánicas y en la duración del mismo. Pero la rejugabilidad que tiene hacen que esto antes mencionado quede no tan presente en la cabeza de cada jugador. El juego a nivel argumental esta bien logrado y como dije antes la rejugabilidad del mismo hace opacar un poco esos puntos negativos que tiene.

El Conde Lucanor supone una mezcla casi perfecta de mecánicas de exploración, puzles y sigilo en un título que tiene como telón de fondo el terror. Quizás la historia no sea demasiado profunda, sin embargo es lo bastante interesante como para mantenernos enganchados de principio a fin por los misterios que hay que desentrañar. A esto tenemos que sumar su estupendo apartado gráfico y su fantástica banda sonora, con lo que podemos decir que Baroque Decay Games han creado un título muy interesante en el que pasar un rato terrorífico en Nintendo Switch. 

The Count Lucanor è un gioco affascinante e divertente, che costruisce con semplicità e precisione un impianto narrativo davvero solido, anche e soprattutto attraverso l'interazione con gli strani personaggi che popolano il castello. Unendo le meccaniche esplorative e puzzle solving di The Legend of Zelda e gli elementi horror/survival di Silent Hill, il titolo ci regala un'esperienza che vale davvero la pena provare, anche per chi generalmente non apprezza la pixel art. Unica nota leggermente stonata è il prezzo (circa 15 euro) in rapporto all'effettiva longevità, che si attesta attorno alle sei ore volendo ottenere tutti i finali. Ciò detto, Baroque Decay confeziona un ottimo prodotto che costituisce una valida aggiunta alla già corposa offerta dello store online targato Nintendo.

Quitando el apartado técnico, que no es malo, El Conde Lucanor es una apuesta interesante en el mundillo independiente. Estamos ante un juego que no debemos coger con la idea de jugar a esa obra narrativa con el mismo nombre. Teniendo esto en cuenta, desde que empezamos a jugar a El Conde Lucanor estaremos expuestos a pasar un buen rato jugando a este título español. Una compra que ni nos arrepentiremos de jugar, pero que tampoco quedará perenne en nuestra memoria.

The Count Lucanor es más que la suma de las partes. Son los acertados diálogos, los intentos del juego por engañar al usuario –con un poco de perspicacia te darás cuenta de cada trampa-, una duración justa para este tipo de desarrollo –ni muy largo para caer en la repetitividad, ni tan corto o fácil como para superarlo de un tirón-, la existencia de un piso opcional, el carisma de los personajes y la ajustada inteligencia de muchos puzles los puntos fuertes que minimizan aquellos aspectos mejorables.

Puede que no sea el mejor survival horror independiente del mercado (Yomawari logra asustar más, por ejemplo), pero El Conde Lucanor es una aventura con toques de terror muy resultona. Logra enganchar desde el principio, y ver cómo nuestras acciones afectan al desarrollo de la aventura y a su desenlace es de lo más satisfactorio.

I was really impressed with this game. The gameplay and design are simple, well thought out and has good pacing. The world changes as you progress and I found the world truly absorbing in interesting to explore. It clearly draws inspiration from many classic games, but that’s not a bad thing and it still manages to have its own unique traits and gameplay elements. I would strongly recommend this game if you’re a fan of retro looking games like Zelda or Undertale or you like a game that has a horror theme whilst still looking beautifully designed.

Con sus luces y sus sombras, el juego recrea una atmósfera que te mete de lleno en una sórdida historia llena de truculentos personajes. Y, aunque la calidad de los puzles es dispar, la jugabilidad que ofrece es robusta y con una narrativa excelente.

After getting over the fact that Hans walks too slow, I really started to get captured in the mythos surrounding the castle. The story was engaging and the puzzles were satisfyingly difficult, the only issue being it really is only a one and done experience. A worthwhile experience, but you can really only be shocked by a decapitated head surrounded by dancing goats once.

The Count Lucanor weet de speler op het verkeerde been te zetten en een hele andere game voor te schotelen dan dat hij op het eerste gezicht doet voorkomen. Dit is alles behalve jammer, want je krijgt een heel leuk spel te spelen. Het niet kunnen doden van je vijanden en de stealth-achtige gameplay, gemixt met leuke puzzels is een combinatie die goed uit de verf komt. Ook de lugubere setting en soms wat bizarre humor vallen allemaal positief uit. Het is alleen weer jammer dat de besturing je soms tegenwerkt en de framerate erg onstabiel is. Dit zit de gameplay helaas soms erg in de weg.

“The Count Lucanor” is a really nice mix of “Zelda A Link to the Past”, “Silent Hill” and beautiful retro graphics. So if you´re a fan of retro-looking horror/adventure/puzzle games, then you should try “The Count Lucanor” as soon as possible!

The Count Lucanor is an inspired, entertaining little horror game. It’s a creepy, 4-hour fairy tale shaped by the choices you make along the way. If you’re a fan of classic fairy tales and the horror genre, this game will not disappoint.

In the end, The Count Lucanor is a great a game all around, and I will gladly be adding it to my list of favorite horror games. It took about six hours to play through, and features multiple endings which adds to its replayability. If you are looking for a unique survival-horror game with a creepy meter (and weird meter) that is cranked up to eleven, then The Count Lucanor is a great choice.

Make sure you get your hands on this surreal and pretty adventure that uses dark humour and scares to great effect. It will be well worth your time and I know that you will also fall in Love with it as much as I did from minute one!

I would like to emphasise the word talent in my previous paragraph as there is a lot of it on display here. The Count Lucanor is a game that doesn’t achieve true greatness, but it brushes up against it so many times that it is definitely worth the price of admission. Any fan of horror will be well served well here.

O game da Baroque Decay consegue juntar inspirações orientais e ocidentais para criar uma experiência que é tão boa, como diferente. 

The Count Lucanor è stata una piacevolissima sorpresa. Nonostante fosse stato spacciato come uno Zelda-clone, si è rivelato un titolo valido, divertente e anche terrorizzante. Avevamo già avuto in passato l’esperienza di giochi low-res come Home o The Lone Survivor a tema horror, ma in questo gioco la tensione è ancor più palpabile, legata all’atmosfera tetra del maniero, che trasmette una sensazioni di disagio ed insicurezza continue. L’unica pecca del gioco è la grafica, che risulta essere troppo sfumata, nonostante la buona realizzazione in pixelart. La colonna sonora di J.S. Bach riproposta in chiptunes è la ciliegina su di una torta terrorizzante.

The Count Lucanor es una aventura interesante, con un cambio de apariencia que, de no existir internet, sorprendería, y con varios finales y decisiones en nuestro camino. Un poco de sigilo, un poco de exploración y algunos puzles y objetos nos llevarán a vivir una corta pero intensa aventura que luce muy bien ya sea en modo portátil o en sobremesa.

The Count Lucanor brings to us the best of two amazing genres that many of us love, with a great twist. The game has memorable and unique characters, a very well done level design and an amazing soundtrack. The survival horror elements are very well done even if the game itself is a bit simplistic. The game is very well thought out and has very good pacing, however that doesn’t stop me from wishing the game were longer!

El Conde Lucanor es un juego que invita a jugarlo del tirón. Un survival horror trabajado en pixelart, con perspectiva top-down y estética anime que nos presenta un relato loco, atrevido y muy original. Con un aspecto visual y unas mecánicas sencillas, consigue crear unas dinámicas muy divertidas y adictivas. Una vez que entres en El Castillo Ténebre, no querrás soltar el mando.

The Count Lucanor is a mostly enjoyable horror tale that is only prevented from being a truly great game thanks to a couple of performance issues and relatively short duration. At its best, the game offers a surprisingly rich story, intriguing (and genuinely creepy) characters and surroundings, and enjoyable puzzle-based tasks to ponder over. The candle and saving systems add to the stress imposed by the castle, forcing you to choose between being safe in the present or keeping supplies for later on (although a harder difficulty setting which provides less of these items could have worked wonders). If you’re looking for something a little bit different, this could well be the game for you.

The Count Lucanor puts a lot of effort into doing a lot of things all at once. I’ve already mentioned the various genres that it draws inspiration from, as well as the quick twists and turns that the story delivers in a relatively short space of time. It doesn’t examine any one thing particularly deeply, but that leaves a lot of room for entertainment, and the game definitely delivers with its black humour and its uncanny ability to humanise the horrific. It’s a little too cute to give you a real fright, but I’ve found that at 1 in the morning, tucked under the covers with the ominous soundtrack ringing in my ears, the last thing you’re going to be wanting is a full-blown jump scare. There are games that deliver horror that’s confronting and often gory, but The Count Lucanor excelled at showing a different side of fear that other studios should take cues from. On the downside, I’ll never trust another goat again for as long as I live. 

The Count Lucanor has its issues -- the story can be quite cheesy and the handheld performance is disappointing -- yet at its core, The Count Lucanor offers beautiful retro-inspired graphics and a level of both freedom and critical thinking that can be rare in modern games.

Baroque Decay haben mit The Count Lucanor ein unterhaltsames und skurriles Puzzle-Adventure geschaffen, das besonders mit Kopfhörern im Handheldmodus der Switch viel Spaß macht. Das Gameplaykonzept des Survival- und Puzzle-Adventures motiviert und hat mich bis zum Ende gut unterhalten. Die angegebene Spielzeit von fünf Stunden hängt natürlich davon ab, wie schnell ihr im Spiel vorankommt. Zudem bietet das Spiel mit den fünf möglichen Enden die Möglichkeit, einen weiteren Anlauf zu wagen. Qualitativ hat der Nintendo eShop mittlerweile einige Indieperlen im Spieleangebot, die um denselben Preis ein besseres Gesamtpaket bieten. Wer dennoch Lust auf ein originelles Puzzle-Adventure hat, kann gerne einen Blick riskieren.

The Count Lucanor es por tanto una aventura la mar de divertida y recomendable. Es cierto que no es demasiado duradera y que echamos de menos mayor contenido, pero resulta lo suficientemente satisfactoria en global como para tenerla en cuenta y revivir esas viejas glorias de hace unos años. Sabe sorprender al jugador y desafiarlo a resolver acertijos sin rebanarle en exceso los sesos, y su sistema de guardado hará que nos debatamos entre la vida y la muerte en más de una ocasión. Trabajos así de pulidos son los que nos gusta ver, por lo que adelante con su compra a lo poco que os gusten las aventuras de corte clásico.

Si te gustó el cuquismo siniestro, los puzzles sencillos y el sentido del humor de Undertale y no te molesta jugar al gato y al ratón con tus enemigos como en si fueras el protagonista de un juego de Frictional Games, El conde Lucanor te ofrece un interesante collage de géneros que, como las buenas fábulas, viene con una moraleja final: no juzgues los videojuegos por su apariencia.

The Count Lucanor is a bloody weird game, but I couldn’t help but to find the whole experience rather endearing. I think it’ll certainly be a title that’ll be divisive amongst gamers though…

Si el aspecto gráfico o sus problemas no os echan para atrás, El Conde Lucanor es una gran aventura que se divierte con el jugador y que alardea de usar diversos géneros con bastante soltura. Llega completamente traducido al idioma de Cervantes y es asequible para nuestros bolsillos -aunque quizás con un precio algo elevado para lo que ofrece- por lo que es una opción muy viable para resolver los misterios del castillo Ténebre en nuestros ratos libres -sobre todo por su corta duración-. Estética pixelart funcional, misterio, acción, toques rpg y rompecabezas es lo que vais a encontrar en este videojuego mitad español mitad galo. Y a Hans, un personaje que podéis amar u odiar, aunque mucho nos tememos que será lo segundo...

The Count Lucanor is a fun and extremely provocative game. The story and themes are deep, dark, and full of fantasy. The visuals and most of the music and audio is well done and fit the overall style besides a few harsh sound effects. Unfortunately, the performance problems, multiple crashes, and the short run time hamper this enjoyable game. I’m not sure I would recommend this as of now with the issues and the short duration especially for the high price the Switch version is asking. Fortunately, you can find it cheap on Steam, which I would recommend.

There is a decent little game here and one I could see some enjoying if they had an evening to spend playing this very slow paced game. Make no mistake getting around feels tiresome at times and you just wish the character could run. There are some frustrating design choices made here which you won't realise until it's too late for example using too many coins on saves. Slowdown also reared its ugly head to my dismay. If you fancy a little mystery where you will get to interact with all manner of weird characters, solving some puzzles and enjoy a slower pace of game then this could be for you.

A lo largo de 'El Conde Lucanor' se juega bastante con la simbología del gusano que se convierte en mariposa. Yo lo interpreto como un mensaje sobre el crecimiento y la madurez. Con Hans, un niño que fruto de su comportamiento infantil se escapa de su cálido hogar para desenvolverse por sí mismo en un ambiente desconocido, siendo el centro de todo ello. Ese viaje es lo que le convierte a él en mariposa, pero no al propio juego. Aunque se disfruta moderadamente, el título de Baroque Decay simplemente da más prioridad a ser un entretenimiento apropiado que a transmitir su mensaje. Porque al fin y al cabo, solo es un simple e inocente juego de puzles al que aún le falta crecer. Un mero cuento infantil y, al mismo tiempo, el niño que lee ese cuento.

The Count Lucanor is as average as it gets. The most impressive aspect is definitely the animated cut-scenes and how many different ways the story can be completed. The problem is that the whole thing is over so quickly - about as long as it takes to tell an actual fairytale. In-game pixel art fails to impress and the amateurish designs and animations undercut the story and themes as depicted in the writing and cut-scenes. Also, Metal Slug 3 is on the Nintendo Switch and runs perfectly, so there is no reason why The Count Lucanor suffers some egregious performance issues.

The Count Lucanor isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s really not that good either, as the monsters fail to live up to ambiance the game’s soundtrack and whispers creates. It’s also a short game, which normally isn’t a bad thing, but it is when the game is The Count Lucanor and Hans is just too slow a moving protagonist that his turtle crawl literally bored me from start to finish. Now I hate to be the guy who says “give this game a miss,” but with the likes of Don’t Knock Twice and Super Mario Odyssey coming soon to Switch, there really is no point in picking it up now as it might make for a better purchase later on down the line, but if you do feel like picking up one Merge Games Switch title, Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure is out now and a huge step on from the lesser work that is showing its age that is The Count Lucanor.
