I was really debating how I would score Metroid Dread. After all, it did live up to many of my hopes and expectations, which is hard to do after a wait this pronounced. But I still couldn’t shake the feeling that Super Metroid did many things just a bit better. As such, I can’t help but score this a little lower than I wanted to. That said, if you’re a fan of the Metroid series, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here for only $59.99. Not only is it challenging and story-driven, but there’s plenty of incentives to replay the game in the form of various galleries. While there’s some frustrating design issues that could have been avoided, this is still a must play game for fans of the series, or just those that own a Nintendo Switch. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another 20 years for the next epic tale of Samus Aran.

Even though it stumbled a little, overall I was quite pleased with Metroid: Samus Returns. I managed to beat it in just over 12 hours with 62% map completion, and only got seriously stuck a handful of times. Not only was this remake gorgeous, but it offers a fantastic return to form for the long running series. If you’re a fan of the series, or are just looking for an excuse to jump on board, you can’t go wrong for only $39.99. Best of all, if the ending is any indication, this might not be the last remake of a 2D Metroid we can look forward to! Here’s hoping Samus is around for many years to come, annihilating alien scum and looking great while doing it.

n conclusion, this is a very well put together game. Aside from the bosses being a bit longer and a bit easier than I’d like, this game does what it does very well. There are clever and satisfying puzzles alongside some good and not overly demanding platforming. The game has a good difficulty level. The puzzles require some thinking, but I doubt you’ll ever be starting at a room wondering what to do. BOOR took me just a couple hours to beat, and costs $5. It also has a speed run mode that eliminates the cutscenes. While it does have fun platforming, there’s not much reason to go through it again unless you want all the collectibles and achievements. If you like puzzle platformers, I can easily recommend this.
