Plus Ultra: Legado is a 2D Metroidvania set during Mexico's inception in the 16th century. This exhilarating yet complex encounter between Europe and the Americas unfolds as a classical adventure.

Using the Metroidvania genre to recount these significant historical events, Plus Ultra: Legado leads players into an exciting “comicvania” experience. Embark on an epic adventure in which you'll see the ins and outs of one of history's most crucial events!

Comicvania

Every Metroidvania blends a variety of gameplay elements, including 2D platforming, exploration, intricate labyrinthine maps, thrilling boss battles, and the essential acquisition of new abilities that serve as keys to unlock previously inaccessible areas.

We wanted to explore new ideas for the Metroidvania genre. That is why we asked ourselves. How would a comic-like Metroidvania work? This is how the idea of “comicvania” was born.

Traversals

For any Metroidvania, traversals are really important. We all love backtracking, but slow, clumsy movement can be a bit tedious. Thus, we put a lot of effort into offering you a fast-paced move-set, so you can enjoy freely moving throughout the world of Plus Ultra: Legado.

Open storytelling

In Plus Ultra: Legado, story and gameplay are not at odds, but seamlessly intertwined. Whenever someone speaks, you're able to move, jump, and break dialogue prompts. Do you want to move to the next line? Smash that bubble! Do you want to go back to exploring the world? Just leave to continue on your adventure. The storytelling leaves you in charge!

Our Review

It's not a contender for the title because it's difficult, because of more things on the map or because it resembles a souls more than anything else. Its differentiator is something rarer and less common: narrative and design in service of a very solid and well-told story.

  • The historical context is not there for decoration.
  • The comic aesthetic is not only in the menus, it intertwines throughout the entire game and extends to the narrative.
  • The game never breaks with the story in pursuit of gameplay.

And it is in all these things where you feel it "polished": it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does leave it nice and smooth and round to spin without too many rough edges. Call me crazy, but I think they knew what they wanted to tell and how they wanted to tell it.
