The Creepy Syndrome may be too tame in terms of Blood ‘n Guts, or overly simplistic for some, but I had a fantastic couple of hours getting lost in this interactive horror story collection, it may not be a game that will shake the genre to its foundations but for the price, it’s a great way to spend an evening and has an Amiga-like pull to its design charms, I’m already looking forward to seeing what Boomfire come up with next!

Cuatro historias muy breves y sencillas de terror con gameplay variado. Si evaluamos su propuesta experimental por el precio que tiene, es algo que merece la pena. Eso sí, su estilo retro no se aplica solo a la estética, sino también en parte a lo jugable y eso es un arma de doble filo (con seguidores y detractores).

The themes and certainly the overall feel of everything do tend to get you a bit out of your comfort zone, if only for the fact that you’re really left not knowing what to expect next. Whether it all comes together to form a cohesive and satisfying whole would be a fair question, but I can’t fault the team behind this for their effort.

Cada historia tiene diferentes finales entre los que nos encontraremos: uno bueno y otro malo. Una vez conseguido dicho final, en cada sesión el psicoanalista nos mostrará también diferentes resoluciones. Un apartado que, como os podéis imaginar en una experiencia corta, hace que se alargue su tiempo útil, si queremos ver todos los finales, pues nos toca tomar decisiones diferentes. Las historias son muy cortas y volver a jugarlo será un placer pese a que no tiene ningún atajo. Su estilo retro llamará la atención y es increíble cómo con tan pocos recursos, el juego nos hace sumergirnos en sus historias. A estos dos chicos solo podemos aplaudirles por ofrecernos una experiencia como ésta, que engancha como pocas.

En conjunto, The Creepy Syndrome ha sido una propuesta sugerente de antología de terror que apuesta por experimentar con sus temáticas narrativas, artísticas y jugables, aunque por desgracia que no haya un hilo conductor más potente le pasa algo de factura.

Without an overarching theme or framework, these tales of horror need to stand on their own. But mostly they wobble. Lord of the Road is the exception: a confident 2D adventure that feels like the unhinged cousin of the original Legend of Zelda. The rest struggle to bring more than jump-scares and some incoherent storytelling to their short runtimes. 

The Creepy Syndrome is an ambitious little game, plagued by amateurish writing and cheap jump scares that at best won’t satisfy horror fans and at worse will annoy them. Half of the game’s anthology of stories is held back by the other, and the two decent stories aren’t strong enough to make up for the weaker ones.
