Beautiful to watch and genuinely challenging, Etherborn offers an innovative approach to puzzle games that has resulted in something unique and provocative.

Trotz der Tiefe und Komplexität des Spielprinzips dauert es überraschenderweise nur wenige Minuten, um die Möglichkeiten der unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und verschiedenen Gravitationen ohne Worte in Etherborn sofort verständlich zu machen. Grund dafür ist das überlegte Leveldesign, das euch ausprobieren lässt und gleichzeitig die Grenzen eurer Handlungsmöglichkeiten klarmacht. Unterlegt wird das rätselhafte Abenteuer von einem entspannten Soundtrack, der mithilfe der weichen Grafik eine Atmosphäre schafft, die bei Problemlösungen für einen kühlen Kopf sorgt. Während das Ziel eines Rätsels so gut wie immer gleich ist und mehr Abwechslung vertragen könnte, besitzt das Spiel leider nur wenige Welten, die sich allerdings jedes Mal sowohl qualitativ als auch mit Blick auf die Schwierigkeit merkbar steigern. Wenn wir allerdings beim Thema des Spiels bleiben und diesen Gesichtspunkt aus einer anderen Perspektive betrachten, so spricht es doch für Etherborn, wenn einer der wenigen Kritikpunkte darin besteht, mehr zu wollen. Obwohl die Kontrolle eurer Figur in bestimmten, engen Situationen etwas schwierig werden kann, fühlt sie sich doch mehr als angenehm an. Ohne es zu merken, erwischte ich mich oftmals beim einfachen Herumlaufen in der Welt von Etherborn, wenn mir beispielsweise die Lösung eines Rätsels fehlte – als verschwendete Zeit habe ich dies jedoch nie wahrgenommen.

Etherborn es un buen juego de acertijos que demuestra cómo hacer laberintos en 3D y cómo explorarlos sin presiones de forma llevadera. Puede que tenga las limitantes de contenido y que dependa mucho de la prueba y error del jugador, pero su diseño de niveles es algo que definitivamente quiero ver en futuras entregas. Altered Matter es un estudio al que no podemos perder de vista.

Etherborn não é um jogo extenso, possui poucos mundos para serem explorados e pode ser finalizado em algumas horas caso o jogador compreenda os enigmas. Após finalizá-lo, não há incentivos para um replay, pois não oferece fases extras ou modos adicionais. Tudo o que se pode fazer é reiniciar o jogo e explorar as mesmas fases apenas com as orbs brancas posicionadas em locais diferentes.

La de Etherborn no es una origin story de tebeo de Marvel, decía, pero sí es una prueba viviente —no la única, pero en realidad no hay tantas— de que de la universidad también se puede salir con un juego bajo el brazo, y moverlo por ahí, y acabar sacándolo y que la cosa haya salido bien; seguro que más tiempo, presupuesto y sobre todo experiencia habrían terminado de pulir asperezas, pero de momento nos quedamos con una ventana privilegiada al trabajo de un estudio muy prometedor.

Un diseño de escenarios exquisito avalan la propuesta que ofrece Etherborn. Jugar con la gravedad no es nada nuevo, pero aquí se usa de manera ingeniosa a la par que elogiable, elevando así la propuesta y haciéndola sobresalir sobre otros juegos de puzles. Todo acompañado de una gran banda sonora. Desgraciadamente las bondades se desvanecen al ser tan efímeras como su duración, dejándonos con la siguiente pregunta: ¿esto es todo lo que nos podía ofrecer la idea o podía haber dado mucho más de si? 

Etherborn looks fantastic, sounds incredible and revolves around a brilliant game mechanic that initially feels like it’s going to lead to some clever puzzles but ramps things up far too quickly and engulfs you with frustratingly complex stages while you’re still trying to find your feet. There’s still a great game in there, but you’ll need to have the patience of a saint to stumble up its 90-degree difficulty curve to find it.

Etherborn becomes a very tricky game but the brain-teasing only lasts a couple of hours. The final riddle, however, feels surprisingly tame and not the big final exam it should be, resulting in a relatively anti-climatic finish. It also doesn’t help that cryptic story, centering on the complexities of human life, winds up being more confusing than profound. If nothing else, a New Game + adds mileage to old stages by placing nodes in new, harder-to-reach areas.  Despite a few drawbacks, the positives of Etherborn’s design combined with its attractive presentation manage to just outweigh its shortcomings. Your noggin will ultimately be left wanting more of Etherborn’s mysteries, but that says a lot about its upsides–or downsides, depending on the angle you’re viewing them.

Overall, Etherborn has its charms: a calming dynamic soundtrack, a smooth and simple art style, and a captivating performance by its narrator. But these are overshadowed by the thin layer of frustration caused by the loose controls and overly restrictive camera. There is potential here and if you enjoy more artful puzzle games like the ones this game has been heavily compared to, it’s at least worth a look. Just be ready for a few hangups along the way that might take you out of the experience.

Etherborn has so much potential, but its best moments are over far too quickly, leaving little replay value aside from showing people how cool the design is.

And yet I’m worried Etherborn won’t stay in my thoughts for as long as Baxter’s words have. Try as it might to nestle its way into the recesses of my mind, Etherborn may end up being a fleeting memory – a pleasant experience but one which will hang on the forefront of your mind, only to be quickly scuppered by something with a bit more of body.

It’s tough to see Etherborn as anything but a misguided project and a missed opportunity.  It’s frustrating to play without the ability to look around, the story has zero weight or impact, and apart from some wonderful visuals, it’s got little to offer.
