This isn't the only sci-fi gamebook available on the App Store, but among the selection, this is assuredly the one with the hardest edge to its narrative. It's also a very fair game, making it a pretty good choice for those who are new to the genre. At the same time, while the game isn't very challenging, having a number of viable routes makes for a much more replayable game than we often see in this genre. You will have to sacrifice certain things in the course of the adventure, and that will close doors to you later on, so if you want to really drink in everything Heavy Metal Thunder has to offer, you're looking at playing through at least a few times. This is a very solid gamebook, with plenty to see and a zippy pace, told through some bizarre, entertaining writing. Fans of gamebooks, especially those who may have been pining recently for a more typical entry into the genre, should certainly give this a look.

A delightfully gory and unpleasant game book experience, Heavy Metal Thunder lays it on thick, but in the best possible way

As engaging as it is, there aren't many reasons to replay Heavy Metal Thunder. For the completionists out there, Heavy Metal Thunder alerts you to the amount of "sections" you've missed on account of your many choices, so there is some desire there to go back and experience every branching pathway. But the lack of post-game rewards makes it hard to want to start again. These points aside, one crazy trip through the cosmos with Cubus Games was enough to sell me on this magnificent gamebook adventure and Heavy Metal Thunder will satisfy sci-fi and RPG fans alike. And if you've been enjoying the influx of gamebooks on the App Store as much as we have, then Heavy Metal Thunder is a title you cannot miss.

It won’t appeal to the gamers looking for quick success, but for those who want to carefully plan ahead, Heavy Metal Thunder is a satisfying tale. It’s a pleasant change of pace from the usual adventure gamebooks on offer and, while plodding, is very atmospheric.

Depending on how much you like choose-your-own-adventure books, your enjoyment of this gamebook may vary from mine. Due to the subjectivity of literature, there is a chance (however slim) that you may consider Mr. Stiff the Isaac Asimov of gamebooks; however, in my opinion, I would say a more apt comparison would be to call him the Stephanie Meyer of science fiction. Regrettably, despite my initial interest in Heavy Metal Thunder, and my high hopes for a piece of gripping and thrilling science fiction set in an inspired and fleshed-out universe, the final product failed to entertain me with every dull page-turn.
