I love Bloody Days. I think it would be better under a different name, as fans of the film expecting anything close to Reservoir Dogs will find themselves sorely disappointed and unable to judge the game on its own merits, but I still love it. I love its jazzy, guitar-heavy soundtrack. I love the style and polish that went into everything from its character models to its UI to its menus, even if that style is nothing like the film its supposedly based on. I love its fast-paced action and its slow, deliberate turn-based strategy. And while the writers certainly aren’t Tarantino, I even like the dumb little dialogue interactions the characters have throughout the missions.

Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days by Big Star Games is a third-person top-down shooter with few connections to Quentin Tarantino’s film other than it being about gangsters with color-coded names; and yet Bloody Days partially succeeds in its aspiration to revive a classic for crime and gangster films, while offering a time-rewind mechanics that helps the game distinct itself from the pool of titles in the top-down shooter category.

Reservoir Dogs Bloody Days is a nice indie game with its loveable side and flaws. The rewind system is a good idea and makes it a very good tactical game, but it breaks the rhythm of the pure fight. A Hotline Miami look-alike but not a play-alike.

There are good ideas at work in Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days, but it’s a shame that one of the most intense and shocking indie movies ever made has spawned a game that’s neither. At its best, it’s a tight, engaging twin-stick shooter with an element of strategy and a cool rewind mechanic, but it never manages to be anything more than that.

When it comes right down to it, I can overlook a lot the adaptation problems and writing that pales in comparison to what Quentin Tarantino accomplished. Hell, I can even look past the crummy character art and questionable level designs. But what I can't get over is how needlessly repetitive the whole thing is. Instead of adding a new layer of intrigue to the concept, the time-altering mechanic only makes things more frustrating and doesn't work with the theme. This is the type of game that would have benefited from a little variety and a more compelling story. This is just another lackluster dual-stick shooter with a big name attached. But look on the bright side, at least it's not the worst game based on Reservoir Dogs.

Reservoir Dogs is a classic movie that deserves a better homage than Bloody Days for its 25th anniversary. The only equivalent would be if your dog died and it got replaced with a turtle. This was not an enjoyable experience and feels like an even sloppier cash-in on a movie franchise than the latest Ghostbusters game did. At least that had some depth. On paper, the idea of a Reservoir Dogs game coupled with what Big Star Games is pitching would warrant a purchase, but the annoying Time Rewind feature and complete lack of connectivity to the actual movie makes this feel like a trip to the dentist. Although at least with that you’d come out with clean teeth.

Even if it wasn't a gross misuse of a license, Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days is a boring, buggy game with a universal selling point that's nowhere as fun, or as smart, as it thinks it is. And just like Joe Cabot, I'm so goddamn mad hollering at you guys, I can hardly talk.
