Moonlighter is an absolutely gorgeous adventure that tells an effective and heartwarming tale. The gameplay is top notch, even if it's a bit simplistic. Take away the launch day technical issues and you've got one top shelf production.

Moonlighter felt very refreshing and I would even be interested in getting it on the Nintendo Switch with how easy it is to pick up and put down. I would fully recommend this to anyone that enjoys top-down games or a nice rewarding challenge. The game could be seen as a bit repetitive in the combat you use to tackle some enemies with your weapon choices. I would be very excited if this game ever gets a sequel and I could see more games adopting the merchant side of it. My only wish for the game is that I wish the town was more lively than just for your own personal use and for your dungeon treks. I really couldn’t connect to any of the villagers in the town in any meaningful way and they seemed very uninteresting.

At the end of the day though, Moonlighter is a truly brilliant title that I find myself extremely addicted to and enamored by. The constant trade off between delving deeper into dungeons or cutting your losses with the loot you have is a consistently intense and thrilling experience, and even when you get too greedy and die in the dungeons, the loss of all your loot only seems to inspire another journey. Despite the seemingly overwhelming depth in each of the games core mechanics, the game almost never feels overbearing and difficult to comprehend. The fact that Moonlighter can both feel mechanically deep and simplistic at the same is a testament to the games design. Pair the addictive gameplay loop of collecting and selling loot, with a brilliant pixel art style and an alluring soundtrack, and you’re left with one of the most satisfying games of recent memory. Moonlighter is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with a Nintendo Switch version slated for release in the near future.

In some ways, the same could be said of the keeping the shop running at peak efficiency, but there's enough interplay with managing your limited baggage space and just enough anchored in supply-and-demand systems that it comes together nicely. It's a shame, then that Moonlighter's also a bit on the short end, as some of these ideas would do well with simply more--but then the combat would like thin out even more. Still, what's here is refreshing, and the balance struck between crawling through dungeons and working with the economics of the town are a good combo while it lasts.

Moonlighter certainly nails the addictive gameplay loop that made me go to sleep way too late at times. Still, it's hard to say that any specific moment, aside from maybe the boss battles, really stands out to me. The idea has been executed before with Recettear, and the lackluster combat mechanics and frequent bugs and oddities don't do the game any favors.

I love these kinds of games and I like the art style chosen, but there are just too many things that either create a hurdle for me, the player, or leave me scratching my head. The game couldn't really keep my interest. There were also a number of UI and mechanics issues that bothered me. In its current state, I may see myself “toying” with the game, but I wouldn't really say I enjoy every moment playing it.
