Small wonder we turn to emulators for fun. BeachHead 2000 is a blatant reminder that even the oldest of game concepts can kick ass until the end of time if it involves heavy weaponry and helpless victims. Gun down ground-troops, tanks, planes, choppers, and anything else stupid enough to get in your way. With this much firepower at people’s fingertips, the game’s got to be NRA-approved.

It’s stupid-simple, it’s repetitive, and I played it a lot longer than I care to admit.

There is a place in the world for mindless shooter games, and Beachhead 2000 should fit into that niche very nicely.

This is when I start being hypocritical and tell you that even with that in mind, this game is strangely addicting just like Missile Command used to be. There is just some kind of call when you play a game that makes you think you can go just one level more. That your reflexes and hand-eye coordination is good enough to get you past the next flood of enemies. The good thing about this game is that the levels are very short and last only for a couple of minutes. This means that you can just play a quick game for a break without having to worry about needing to save or anything because you can just jump in again later. So if you're looking for a cheap game that doesn't require much thinking, and you can get past the striking similarities to the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, this may be a winner for you.

The casual gamer, at whom this game is seemingly directed, may enjoy the cathartic nature of blasting away at the armies of his/her personal grudge or animosity, but the lack of variety (you do the same thing over and over again from the same bunker just quicker and more often) and the resultant brain-overload will have even the most tolerant (or naïve) gamer shelving this piece of software after a few hours.

The basic concept of Beach Head 2000 shows quite a bit of promise. Sadly it falls far short of its potential, lacking any customizable features or scalability. It suffers from dated graphics combined with lackluster sound effects and a disappointing absence of music. Beach Head 2000 would have fit in quite well among such point-accumulating games as Maelstrom, back when games were simple and didn't rely upon complex stories. In modern times, however, when even simple retro-games like Frogger get massive face lifts and hordes of options, there is little room for a game that prides itself on pure simplicity and repetitive action. With so little in the way of content it almost seems as though WizardWorks rushed Beach Head 2000 out the door without pausing to explore the possibility of a truly unique idea.

I'm really not going to go on much further about Beachhead 2000, it's really not worth the time and effort let alone your gaming dollar. It's a remake and it's a budget title so it doesn't come as a surprise how poorly it turned out. For every decent budget release (New York Times Crossword Puzzle, Dirt Track Racing), there are usually a handful of bombs (Innova Disc Golf, Emergency Rescue Firefighters, Swamp Buggy, Harley Davidson) and unfortunately Beachhead 2000 falls into the later category. D-Day is putting it lightly.
