Get ready to be zapped back to the 90s with Indigo 7: Quest for Love. This colourful hexagon puzzle game has an incredible art style and a genuinely funny coming-of-age story filled with great characters to meet and new ‘foes’ to defeat. Don’t just enjoy this alone as the multiplayer can be played with up to three friends as you compete against each other in a variety of fast-paced puzzle modes.

If you’re looking for a colorful and fun puzzle game with a new twist, then Indigo 7: Quest for love can certainly scratch that itch. There’s a bit of a learning curve as you get to learn the combo system and better understand the peculiarities of each of the game modes, but then it all clicks with ease. I do have to mention that I ran into a bug that would make it so the game would not recognize any inputs from the D-Pad or the left analog stick to select colors – which forced me to close the game and load it up again – that will hopefully be addressed soon by way of a patch. Indigo 7: Quest for love is out on PlayStation 4 with a $14.99 asking price.

Indigo 7 is a match em up game whereby you flip colors next to your already flipped pieces to clear the board. Sounds confusing? It’s not but the game is really bad at breaking you in slowly and explaining it all in a way that is accessible. Indigo 7 has good intentions but when you are creating a new game style it’s important to have the players in the know, Indigo 7 alienates everyone and for a game all about color, there are no Colourblind settings but then again the game has NO game settings at all. The music is not great, the story is so forgettable I forgot it had one, the voiceovers are really bad. Put it this way, the voice-overs are a cringe guy they think he’s a rocker so he sings out catchphrases but delivers it in a way that makes you think the crazies have invaded Britains got talent, it’s horrendous and a no from me. I saw glimmers of hope in the battle modes but again I didn’t K ow the rules or get told them so I race along and clear the board only to lose to a person with half a board filled? I didn’t fancy playing the mode over and over in the hopes I pick up what they are putting down. That’s the morning glory here, Indigo 7 doesn’t try to include or even care about the new players, it’s made for people who know the rules already, and if you don’t then you are not welcome. It has the potential to be a good puzzle game but it won’t let you just get on with learning and playing or encouraging you.

The basic gameplay of Indigo 7 is a good mixture of lesser-seen mechanics with a traditional puzzle game feel. That said, it isn't particularly intuitive once you get past the basic colour matching and into the combo building. It's not that it doesn't work but it definitely doesn't work brilliantly. As such, the game feels like a struggle to play rather than one that is easy to play but hard to master. Some of the variations on the main mode are good though but if this was ever going to work, somebody would have made it years ago.

There is definitely some content here to explore and even a platinum Trophy to add to your collection. But, ultimately, the main draw of the game is not appealing enough to warrant more than just a cursory play of the main Adventure. After that, there is not much here to keep you coming back for more.

I applaud Indigo 7: Quest For Love for trying something different. It’s a fun enough puzzle game that fans of Tetris and Puyo will be interested in, and its presentation is charming and eye-catching. Sadly it’s let down by a poorly thought-out scoring system, which is likely to bring any enjoyment of the game to a premature halt.
