To clear the palate, and because it’s so much fun, I put some time in with Robotron 2084 after I decided I was done with this game. For reference’s sake, I only discovered Robotron in recent years and have no history with the title to feel nostalgic about. It still holds up, though. The ramping up the challenge is perfect, allowing the player to get used to enemy behavior before moving to the next wave. It’s still relentless, requiring an almost superhuman level of situational awareness and quick reflexes. It is a masterwork on how to destroy a player but leave them wanting more. Bot Vice, on the other hand, is missing that magic. With another pass for tuning, the title could be something really special. All the pieces are already there. For now, though, it is something that should only be acknowledged by the truly masochistic.

Bot Vice es uno de los juegos que más me ha sorprendido este año. Quizás ha quedado un poco escondido detrás de las ingentes cantidades de videojuegos que entran en Steam, pero se trata de un shooter arcade cañero, intenso, difícil y muy divertido.

Pero no es para todo el mundo. Ni siquiera tengo claro si es para mí, pero su calidad es incuestionable. Se resiste a darse por vencido pero sabe aceptar la derrota frente a nosotros. A decir verdad, casi parece alegrarse. Quiere mostrárnoslo todo y que lo disfrutemos, pero tendremos que matarnos por conseguirlo. En los viejos tiempos las cosas se hacían de otra manera. Hace unas semanas llegó Stranger Things a Netflix. Una serie bien, no excepcional pero entretenida, y siendo un verano lento como suelen ser los veranos, pues todos la vimos y la gente la adoró. Diría que Bot Vice es el equivalente, pero esta obra se esfuerza mucho más por inventar y dejar claro su estilo propio. Hay tributos, pero no entorpecen el discurso. Los ochenta siguen vivos y con gancho, incluso treinta años después.
