The Ancient Mariner was as a narrative action-adventure with a focus on open-world exploration. Although the game was never completed, it was known that its gameplay would be driven by human emotions and would rely on a deep systemic emotional framework and a highly symbolic art style. Its name, which alludes to the famous poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," suggests a spiritual or thematic connection to the studio's acclaimed game, Rime, delving into similar themes of loss, memory, and redemption.
Its existence became known after the studio's closure, when all of its assets were put up for auction.
