Is This Seat Taken? is a charming series of logic puzzles with a serene soundtrack and a fun story to follow. It's brilliantly designed for short sessions and adds just enough to keep the experience fresh through the end. It's not a long journey, but it's one that's worth sitting down to appreciate.

Everdeep Aurora intrigued me. It moved me. It made me explore. Guided me often without me knowing it. It forced me to learn where things were (there is a map, but it does not mark everything), to backtrack, to explore, to remember, to find what was asked of me and solve what wasn’t, to carve my path in a way that acknowledged I would be back here, wherever that was, again. It took me through a world that felt old and lived in and like it could have been made twenty years ago but is probably only possible today. It introduced me to Shell, who reminded me of the value of being kind and helping others.

Blades of Fire

Blades of Fire is probably going to end up as one of those games people refer to as a PS2-ass video game (complimentary), and I feel that. It’s a kind of game that feels out of place in time, but benefits from its accidental time travel by doing things a PlayStation 2-era console simply can’t. And in turn, it benefits from not being beholden to several more decades of convention that burden so many games coming out today, in a much more risk-averse and audience-starved environment. In that respect, Blades of Fire is pretty cool and interesting. It also annoys the bejeezus out of me at every possible opportunity. But I’m glad I played it, which is way more than I can say about Samus Returns.

Bubble Ghost Remake

I see and respect what Bubble Ghost Remake attempted here. Take an obscure game, reimagine it, make it big and beautiful, and offer something fresh to puzzle fans. But as it turns out, “bigger” was a crucial mistake. Not everyone will see this and seek out the original, but if they do, they’ll plainly observe how a smaller, stage-based challenge structure turns something kind of wonky and frustrating into a true hidden gem. And considering how my biggest takeaway is how grateful I am to have Game Boy Bubble Ghost in my rotation now, I suggest anyone and everyone do just that.

While it may need a little more time brewing in the cauldron, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain was a fun ride and just goes to show that Chibig is one developer worth keeping an eye on.

Neva, as a symbol of life itself, mirrors the inevitability of change, making the journey feel like a personal allegory for parenthood and the passage of time. In many ways, Neva ends just as it begins, with a poignant reflection on the cycle of life. Although the experience is brief–credits roll after about 5-6 hours–the impact of Neva lingers long after, making it a great choice for those looking to get emotionally gut-punched by a visually stunning and mechanically concise platforming adventure game.

Creatures of Ava is a deeply human game about monsters on an alien planet. Its themes of empathy and acceptance shine brightly, setting itself apart from similar titles. It manages to deliver a thoughtful message about acceptance and living in harmony while also being something I can play to kick back and relax after a long day.

Song of Nunu is a heartwarming offering out of Riot Forge, despite being so frosty. It’s one of the few Riot Forge spinoffs I can recommend to all ages because of the genuinely whimsical friendship between Nunu and Willump, a boy and his legendary beast. I wish the presentation was smoother, and the developers found better ways to transition between gameplay and cutscenes. Moreover, it's not a long adventure. However, it’s still a solid entry in the Riot Forge universe and yet another example of how many interesting flavors League of Legends and the universe of Runeterra have to offer. If you’re looking for something both lighthearted and heartwarming, Song of Nunu will give you something to keep warm on a winter evening.
