Simply put, Relicta is in a class of its own. Its design is often head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries, the writing is of the highest quality, and the game looks far better than it honestly needs to. Absolutely anyone who considers themselves a fan of the genre owes it to themselves to play this game. It'll take you to the moon.

Relicta is a solid puzzle title. Sure, it doesn’t exactly diversity its puzzles all that much, and the plot isn’t exactly that interesting. However, it still delivers a thought-provoking, exigent experience that feels polished and enjoyable. Plus, it looks stunning. Nothing much to praise regarding its soundtrack or voice acting, though. In any case, if you love titles like Portal and The Talos Principle, then this might just get you interested in tossing boxes around with complex gadgetry again.

It's a shame, then, that the zero gravity part of Angie's skills in particular can disrupt the otherwise tightly directed gameplay, making you feel like you're sometimes being forced into a 'trial and error' approach that is also limited by a level design with clearly defined invisible barriers. Nevertheless, Relicta delivers - except for these frustrating points - a very solid puzzle experience that will especially appeal to fans of games like Portal and The Talos Principle, even though Relicta may not quite reach the level of these two greats.

Relicta is an enjoyable puzzle game, but some of the stages can more frustrating than fun, thanks to a mixture of unreliable mechanics and the developers forcing the player to abide by a strict set of boundaries at all times. Relicta still offers an enjoyable puzzle-solving experience despite its issues and the mystery of what is happening on the base is enough of an incentive to keep pushing through the annoying parts of the game.

When it comes to story in puzzle games, less is more. Relicta takes a risk by trying to encapsulate an engrossing story within an imaginative puzzle experience. The narrative side of the game unfortunately doesn’t pan out and creates a bipolar experience – with intuitive puzzle design and fresh mechanics on the positive side – and a convoluted and unnecessary story on the negative. Fortunately, the majority of your time playing will be spent within puzzles which is where the game really shines. Relicta’s expert use of magnetism, physics, and momentum coupled with its complex design are what make it easy to recommend for fans of the genre.

While Relicta does at least try to put in the work to help bolster the scale of its world with a story to support it and characters to refer back to, the end result is far from one you can take seriously. In no way helped by what is a rather clumsy and laughably-amateurish mix of inconsistent performances. At the very least, where it matters most, the focus on physics manipulation results in a good mix of challenge that, while not the most inventive or consistent of puzzle outings, still offers an occasional delight with how its more emergent puzzle-solving inevitably plays out. Though there may be better and more narratively-intriguing entries out there already, for genre enthusiasts focused squarely on the puzzles themselves, Relicta‘s subtle self-awareness in its own pitch — as much the assortment of challenges on display — are enough to help it win out in the end.

It would take forever to discuss everything Relicta gets players to do over it’s tremendous (for a game like this’) runtime, but you must know that it will force a complete change of perspective time and time again, even when you are positive you know how everything works. Out of nowhere, thirteen hours in, you’ll need to figure out it’s possible to jump on drones and ride them over chasms, for example. On the other hand, the ‘jankier’ tasks asked of the player also deliver a lot of “are you kidding me? Is that really how it’s supposed to be done?” moments, as a cube is convulsively forced into awkward positions or, through a minor physics tick, becomes unrecoverable, thus demanding the whole area be re-done. Clearly a product of the creative team’s love of 201X-ish 3D puzzle games, it’s still a must-play for fans of the genre looking for a bit of a niche nostalgic hit or for those that missed the likes of Q.U.B.E, Magrunner: Dark Pulse, Quantum Conundrum, and so on the first time around. It’s a good time and a fantastic brain-burner, but perhaps by trimming some of the weaker areas and focusing on what makes it special, Relicta could have stood a little taller next to some of the giants in its category.

Relicta offers some fine puzzle solving gameplay for those who are dying for more of it. If you loved every minute of Portal, The Witness, Obduction, or other sorts of puzzle adventures then Relicta does have something for you. But it’s not as well polished as those titles, and doesn’t offer as much creativity in puzzle solving, or variety in the puzzles themselves. The world around this does though, and presents a decent story to delve into. But there’s a lot more that could be done to fine tune the experience overall.
