Lamentum transported me to a place of nightmares that I didn’t want to wake up from. Its gameplay was spot-on and the world that Obscure Tales built was flawless. I wish there were more games in the genre like this. This was just the start-up I needed for the Halloween season and it’s sure to be in my line-up of titles to play every year. If you’re a scaredy-cat like me, you’ll especially feel right at home. While it maintains a horrifying vibe, it doesn’t traumatize you with un-needed jumpscares to make its point. This is a title that any horror fan could get into and enjoy.

Lamentum is equal parts frightening and enticing, serving up a scintillating world filled with Lovecraftian horrors and remnants of old school Resident Evil and Silent Hill. It is a must-play for any fans of the genre looking for challenging gameplay, deep mythos, and an alluring narrative.

Lamentum’s story and puzzle-solving challenges do feel too much like a rehash of those very same games that inspired it. In some ways, being an almost 1-1 repetition. However, thanks to its spine-chilling atmosphere and old-school survivor horror mechanics, it does play like a survival horror game from the 1990s. So if you like those, this is definitely the game for you.

There were also a number of bugs which stymied review, including getting stuck inside level architecture and losing control of the left Joy-Con analog stick during harried sequences. Player mileage may vary on this front, and a version update will hopefully cleanse these issues on day of release. Beyond these misgivings, additional praise is due for a general absence of jump scares, that old standby which indie horror relies upon all too frequently. The occult themes, macabre designs, and that ambient audio prove much more effective at Lamentum’s goals. There are even a few different endings - two of which are not obvious - which bump up the replayability like other survival horror classics. Lamentum is a fine debut that happens to serve a very specific fanbase, the same players who will celebrate its lack of trusty modern gameplay conveniences.

Lamentum is like a salad, it is a fantastic idea with delicious bits in it like the combat and general sense of exploration. While not without issues, the game is still fun. Then the plain pieces of lettuce would be the puzzles, they are at the base of the game and the hurdle to jump through to get to the good bits. And the visuals, well personally salads always look good in their own specific way and it’s the same here, Lamentum knew the style it was going for and hits it amazingly.
