The complexity of these 'line of sight' patterns is much greater in the mission pack than the original, even from the first mission. It may be that Pyro have made the game just too hard to be appreciated by the general gamer, and Beyond the Call of Duty will only be truly enjoyed by Commandos diehards who will put in the time to painstakingly work out their mission plan.

Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty is a VERY difficult game. It is much more difficult than the original. It would sometimes take me days to complete a mission and I had to constantly save and restart the game, to the point of absolute frustration. There is a difficulty setting at the start of your first mission with the choice of “Easy” or “Hard”. It should read: “Very Hard” or “Impossible”! My other complaint is the fact that there are only eight missions, compared to the first game in the series, which had 20. Granted, the suggested retail price of this game is only $29.99, but it would have been better if Eidos added another 12 missions and called it a sequel. This game will constantly require you to think and use trial and error to create different strategies. There is no question this is a challenging game and never-ending patience will be vital for success.

I really like the style and substance in this title, and look forward to a long line of Commandos games. My only hope is that Pyro takes the affectionate criticism to heart and implements the changes and fixes outlined here. This series has great potential, and while not fully realized in this product, they have made considerable progress.

Commandos: Beyond The Call Of Duty continues the excellence established at the beginning of the series. The masterful interface with its windowed views is left virtually unchanged, as are most other aspects of the game. The big change is in difficulty and veterans as well as new players will often feel frustrated when faced with the incredible numbers of guards. It teeters perilously close to being too difficult, so those easily discouraged should avoid it. Those looking for a challenge, though, will most likely embrace this game and fight the Hun with cunning and elan.

In the end, BtCoD is not much different than Behind Enemy Lines. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Pyro has expanded on their original idea in this stand alone expansion pack, offering up another helping of unique gameplay that's challenging even to the most seasoned strategy veteran. It just leaves me wondering what the real sequel to Commandos might be like.

In spite of everything, it's inaccurate to say that Beyond the Call of Duty is far worse than the original. If anything, the two games are difficult to distinguish, so fans of the original will enjoy Beyond the Call of Duty because of its inherent similarity to its predecessor. And to be fair, there are certain subtle new twists to this game that add strategic depth, such as the spy's ability to wear several types of uniforms. But at the same time, most of the subtle changes have adverse effects and make Beyond the Call of Duty feel like more of the same in the worst kind of way.
