Sword of the Necromancer

And that’s how I feel about Sword of the Necromancer overall: unsatisfied. While its queer twist on a usually heteronormative story deserves to be recognised, the game is let down by not letting the new ideas come to fruition. It feels like I received a bouquet of violets, but instead of them being fresh and in-bloom, they are already wilting. With just a few tweaks, the bouquet could revitalise into a fun roguelike, and while it’s overall a serviceable experience, there’s really no reason to go back once you have the true ending, if you don’t feel tired out before then.

Anima: Gate of Memories gives glimpses into a fascinating world of powerful magic, ancient artefacts and legendary heroes. Unfortunately, what potential lies beneath its surface is utterly obscured by horrendous controls, an embarrassing script, dull characterisation and sparkly, but uninspired combat. Perhaps diehard fans of the original RPG might find something to love, but it's unlikely anyone else will. And it's a shame, too, because there's so much potential beneath Anima's subpar execution.

The Last Door is one of the best horror games I have played in some time, though its short length and episodic format tends to break the mood. Creepy art, unsettling music and disturbing characters create a memorably scary experience. Puzzles are challenging, but rarely difficult, and the mysterious story will keep you hooked. Try it for free on browser first, then nab that improved collector's edition on Steam if it strikes your fancy.
