If this sounds like a bit of a love letter, it is still underselling just how fantastic Samus Returns has turned out. Stunning animations, a fantastic soundtrack, and awesome cinematic moments come together to remind us of the amazing roots of this series, while updating it for a fresh audience. Metroid: Samus Returns is one of the best Nintendo 3DS games of all time, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. 

All told, Samus Returns is a strong comeback that stakes a legitimate claim on being the best game on the 3DS. MercurySteam has executed on this remake wonderfully, sliding in seamlessly with the rest of the series. It's been a long, frustrating seven year wait, but it's great to have Metroid back. Here's hoping it won't be leaving again any time soon. 

Don’t be fooled by the connection to Metroid II: this game has been revamped, redesigned and rejuvenated to such an extreme degree that to all intents and purposes it’s a brand new adventure. This is far and away one of the best Metroid games ever made, and one of the best examples of the entire Metroidvania genre as a result. Melee counters and free aiming have made combat feel fresh and exciting again, while the environments are incredible – especially when viewed in auto-stereoscopic 3D. It’s a given that this is a must-buy for Metroid fans, but it’s also essential for those who’ve never played a 2D Metroid and want to see what the fuss is all about. This is what the fuss is all about, and the wait was so, so worth it.

Samus’ last 2D adventure was in 2004 with the GBA release Metroid: Zero Mission, which was a remake of the original Metroid. Despite the lengthy hiatus between 2D entries, I was initially disappointed to hear that MercurySteam’s Metroid project was another remake. However, Samus Returns has enough unique content that it feels like a worthy sequel. MercurySteam’s first outing with the franchise is also different enough from the recent fan remake AM2R, so fans shouldn’t hesitate to pick up this rare gem. This might be Samus’ first 2D adventure in more than a dozen years, but it’s a great reminder of why we fell in love with the franchise in the first place.

Metroid: Samus Returns contains everything that makes the classic Metroid games so impressive and adds a number of key changes. The fantastic control, challenging end-battles and the sense of discovery make the game on par with the most acclaimed installments of the franchise.

Going into Metroid: Samus Returns, I was hopeful and optimistic. But given the past decade of Metroid, it was hard to not be a skeptic. After beating Metroid: Samus Returns, my skepticism washed away, mostly thanks to the fact that this 3DS game pays a loving homage to the greatness of past entries while adding enough new elements to feel like a fresh and wonderful modern experience. With their powers combined, Nintendo and MercurySteam basically struck gold with this game. Samus Returns is a dynamite entry in the fabled series and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Metroid: Zero Mission and Super Metroid. If you’ve been waiting for a new 2D Metroid game from Nintendo for more than a decade, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

Samus Aran regresa por la puerta grande con una aventura que es todo un ejemplo de cómo deberían ser todo los remakes: esculpido sobre la piedra de Metroid II, pintado con los colores de Super Metroid y bañado con el barniz de Metroid Prime. Samus Returns no sólo es un gran Metroid: también es uno de los mejores juegos de Nintendo 3DS.

Si son fans de Metroid entonces es más que obvio lo que tienen que hacer: Samus Returns es un título que simplemente deben jugar y que no puede faltar en su colección; es imprescindible para ustedes, más aún porque con su apoyo le harán saber a Nintendo que todavía hay enorme interés por la IP. Por otro lado, aquellos que jamás han tocado un título de la franquicia encontrarán en este remake no sólo una experiencia de juego inolvidable sino el método ideal tanto para comprender las razones que han hecho de ésta una de las propiedades más queridas de Nintendo como volverse fanáticos de ella. Así de genial está.

Metroid: Samus Returns es una entrega muy necesaria para una franquicia que parecía algo olvidada por parte de Nintendo, pero que regresa por todo lo alto para hacer las delicias de los amantes de las aventuras clásicas de Samus y para enganchar a una nueva generación de jugadores. Desde aquí, pedimos ya que le dejen a MercurySteam hacer un remake de Super Metroid. 

It has been a staggering 13 years since the last 2D Metroid game and Samus has finally returned to her roots. But Metroid: Samus Returns doesn’t merely hope to satisfy a sense of nostalgia, it transcends those aspirations to become a much more compelling experience. It takes nearly everything about its predecessors that made them great and introduces new elements that make gameplay feel fresh and exciting. It may not top the series’ best titles, but Samus Returns undoubtedly brings 2D Metroid back in glorious fashion, resulting in one the best 3DS games in recent memory.

Il s’agit de bien plus qu’un simple remake comme on est habitué à voir de nos jours dans l’industrie. C’est en fait une réimagination complète qui fait honneur à l’opus original en l’améliorant à tous les points de vue. L’équipe de MercurySteam a prouvé que la franchise a bel et bien toujours sa place en 2017.

Still, as the name of the game implies, Metroid: Samus Returns is a homecoming for one of Nintendo’s most beloved heroes, and it’s a return to form that many had been anticipating for years. To revisit something said at the beginning of this review, it has been 13 years since Samus starred in a side-scrolling shooter and after playing through this latest title it’s odd to think of any rational reason as to why she ever left.

Honestly, I could rant on about how completely badass Samus comes off in some of the more action focussed cutscenes, or about the incredible soundtrack that brings back all the nostalgic classics (headphones on full volume recommended) but I think calling it an incredible Metroid game says all that and more. As a dabbler in the series, I’ve definitely been hooked and will be going back to play through all of the titles I’ve skipped over to make amends. I don’t remember the last game I played that intrigued me so much I had to do some research and ended up reading through the entire history and lore of the in-game universe. Well, Samus Returns did. Now I know all about the history of the Chozo race, Samus’ origins, and hope so much that it does well enough to justify a real comeback for the Metroid franchise. Simply put – Samus Returns is the new benchmark against which all other games of this genre will be measured against.

This is right up there with Super Metroid in terms of sheer class, taking the spirit of Metroid II: Return of Samus and transforming it so wondrously for the modern day that it is barely recognisable, with a plethora of brand-new extras thrown in. Metroid: Samus Returns is no mere remake of a Game Boy classic; it is a love letter to the Metroid series, and a thorough reimagining of the core concept, adding in some favourite elements from later releases, and new content that fits hand in glove. Lay any concerns down, as this is top notch entertainment through and through.

A superb remake of Metroid II and the best 2D entry since Super Metroid, that doesn’t compromise at all in terms of challenge, complexity, or atmosphere.

Metroid: Samus Returns shows why 2D Metroid is still top-tier. It’s far from the perfection that Super Metroid had, but this takes my least liked 2D Metroid game and reimagines it so completely that it almost beats the remake of the original Metroid in my estimations. If someone at Nintendo can add the ability to switch control schemes, it would make a huge difference. This is the return we’ve been waiting for, though I want Nintendo to develop the “Next Mission” in 2D for the Switch themselves.

There is very little to complain about with Metroid: Samus Returns, I will be the first to admit that I was sceptical upon its initial announcement, only for the fact that MercurySteam developed the less than impressive Castlevania: Mirror of Fate on the same device. What we have here instead however is a highly-polished title that shows that the ageing 3DS somehow still has legs in it. Aside from the Pokémon Sun and Moon sequels, Samus Returns could very well be one of the last big 3DS titles, but with games like this, I’m just not ready to let go of my 3DS just yet. 

Metroid: Samus Returns is the perfect throwback for fans of the genre. With a cleaver counter system, solid controls and atmospheric gameplay it truly stands beside the other 2D entries. It even makes us forget about the tragedies that was Other M and Federation Force. Almost.

To call Metroid: Samus Returns a remake feels unfair. Remakes are old games with new coats of paint: an upgrade in resolution here, reworked artwork there. Samus Returns is far more than that. It’s a top-to-bottom reimagining, bringing the bones of a game that’s over 25 years old into the modern era with fantastic results.

As the first 2D Metroid game in over a decade, Samus Returns faces unfairly high expectations. Mercury Steam's involvement, a team known to play fast and loose with classic game traditions, was also a potential red flag for some. In hindsight, there was never anything to worry about, and a lot to look forward to. Samus Returns is both a return to form and a look to the potential future for 2D Metroid games, where combat plays a bigger role and exploration involves clever thinking rather than persistent guessing. Fans get more than they bargained (and hoped) for, and everyone else gets an excellent 2D action game with one of the most captivating and capable video game heroes around.

There’s no need for a flashy presentation when it comes to Samus Returns because the gameplay speaks for itself. Yes, it contains the beautiful visual detail of a Nintendo title, but, more importantly, its precision and skill-based game design found in today’s best titles received the most attention. Acting as more than just fan-service, or maybe an apology for Other M, this game is a reminder that 2D platforms still work when given diverse combat style, and surprisingly, a hopeful hint to Nintendo that Metroid might be their ticket to pulling in a whole new generation of players.

Metroid Samus Returns is the ultimate remake of a classic Metroid game. With fluent gameplay mechanics and new additions, the new title plays and feels like a brand new Metroid game.

En conclusión, se puede decir que cuando el público del E3 se levantó a aplaudir el anuncio de 'Metroid: Samus Returns' no fue en balde y es que por primera vez en año la saga vuelve a sentirse como realmente es, consiguiendo a su vez ya no sólo que los más entrados en años puedan disfrutar una vez más de su cazarrecompensas favorita, sino también abriéndole la puerta a nuevos fans que podría encandilarse de la saga. Asimismo, es cierto que quizás el título no termina de reinventarse como ocurrió por ejemplo con el último Zelda, pero no cabe duda de que el equipo de MercurySteam  ha conseguido ya no sólo continuar la fórmula, sino mejorarla y marcar los pasos de cara al futuro. Futuro del cual, sinceramente, espero poder hablar muy pronto porque ahora sí que sí. Samus ha regresado.

Lo único que se ha perdido por el camino es la atmósfera opresiva del escenario, intensificada por una selección musical que incrementaba la sensación de explorar territorio ignoto y que aquí ha sido sustituida por versiones más rítmicas o, directamente, por guiños a otros lanzamientos de la serie. Samus ha vuelto y es más todoterreno, más rápida y certera, pero no más fuerte, y eso se traduce en una experiencia más satisfactoria para un jugador que tiene que estar cambiando de munición, poder y forma cada poco tiempo, sacando a relucir lo increíble que es el traje de la protagonista y sintiéndose más enfundado en él que nunca. Porque el mundo ha cambiado y nos hemos adaptado a él, y porque paradójicamente Samus siempre ha sido el Alien de cada una de sus aventuras, este regreso es lo que tenía que ser: una actualización acertada de algo que funciona tan bien como lo ha hecho estas últimas tres décadas. Feliz regreso, compañera cazarrecompensas.

Todo lo que amamos de la jugabilidad en 2D más añadidos con un toque Prime, un poco de Other M y mucho, pero que mucho Metroid. Samus ha vuelto y se queda para dar mucha guerra.

Si nunca habéis jugado a Metroid, os suplico y os ruego que lo hagáis. Pocas veces diré que un juego consigue llegarme tanto con su control y su sentido de la exploración que con este. No llega a superar al gran Super Metroid, eso es una tarea casi imposible de conseguir, pero se queda cerca. Si Zero Mission fue el juego que consiguió desterrar al primer Metroid, Samus Returns ha conseguido lo mismo con Metroid II. Así que coged y apoyad a esta increíble saga comprando este maravilloso juego.

En resumen, nos encontramos ante un Metroid con todas las letras que sirve de feliz reencuentro, de buen remake y de genial base para apostar por algo más rompedor en el futuro. Ahora sabemos que la fórmula sigue funcionando, gusta y puede evolucionar (esta Samus tiene más poderes, es más plástica y ágil), solo hay que lanzarse de lleno a por una nueva entrega que sea algo totalmente nuevo. Ha sido una grata sorpresa retomar un buen metroid 2D tras casi diez años de ausencia.

A great indicator of a great game is where it is tough to put the game down. One where you want to keep on coming back to the game’s world the moment you stop playing. Metroid Samus Returns has that feeling and I couldn’t help but play it longer than I wanted to and pick it up the next day sooner than I should have. The game does everything so well and finally ends the long wait for another 2D Metroid game. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 13 years for another Metroid game.

Metroid: Samus Returns es uno de los juegos bandera de Nintendo 3DS. No solo por lo que propone, una reimaginación brillante de un clásico de Nintendo, si no por lo que significa. Y ese significado es que Samus ha vuelto al primer plano de la actualidad en el mundo de los videojuegos. Después de tanto tiempo, Samus está entre nosotros con una aventura a la altura de su legado (no como Other M) y la firme promesa de volver el año que viene por todo lo alto. Mercury Steam se ha ganado la confianza de Nintendo con este sobresaliente Samus Returns y no sería de extrañar que en años venideros esa buena reputación se convierta en otro nuevo encargo, otro Metroid hecho en España que mantenga la inercia de lo iniciado ahora. Pero eso ya se verá, lo que impera ahora mismo es disfrutar de lo que tenemos, un juego que recupera la esencia de un serie que había permanecido demasiado tiempo en el deseo colectivo de los jugadores de todo el mundo. Eso hay que celebrarlo por todo lo alto.

Metroid: Samus Returns è molto più di un valido remake di un classico del passato (peraltro non popolarissimo e dunque verosimilmente nuovo di zecca per una larga fetta di pubblico). Metroid: Samus Returns rappresenta, sotto diversi punti di vista, un momento di capitale importanza per la saga, in quanto vera e propria occasione di rinascita per la cacciatrice di taglie più amata dell'universo: una rinascita che ha il sapore di una mezza resurrezione, dopo un periodo buio e difficile ingiustamente in bilico fra mediocrità e oblio. Con classe, rispetto e intelligenza - ma non senza qualche piccola sbavatura - gli Spagnoli di MercurySteam si sono dimostrati in grado non soltanto di aggiornare secondo il gusto moderno un videogame del 1992, ma anche e soprattutto di riportare sugli schermi del 3DS l'icona di una Nintendo che mancava da tanto, troppo tempo. Restituendo a Samus Aran la dimensione che davvero le spetta, ovvero quella di volare lassù, nel cosmo che è proprio solo dei grandissimi. Forse pure per meriti non del tutto suoi (il desiderio di un Metroid del genere ci ha di certo messo lo zampino, dopo anni di digiuno cullati nel sogno del fantomatico Metroid Dread...), ma Samus Returns mi ha divertito, entusiasmato e mi ha ricordato quanto mi mancasse una delle mie saghe preferite di sempre.

Parece mentira que hayamos tenido que esperar tantos años para volver a disfrutar de un nuevo Metroid en condiciones, pero Metroid: Samus Returns complacerá sobradamente a los exigentes fans de esta serie, que van a disfrutar muchísimo del gran trabajo que ha hecho MercurySteam desarrollando este remake. Un juego que se mantiene muy fiel a la habitual fórmula de la saga y al título en el que se basa, pero que a la vez se siente como una nueva aventura, con pequeñas novedades y un apartado gráfico completamente renovado.

Una gran cantidad de contenidos, que nos aseguran entre 13 y 16 horas de juego si somos completistas, un apartado audiovisual de gran nivel y, en definitiva, una producción que trata con respeto a la obra original mientras añade novedades bien implementadas, definen el acierto de Mercury Steam con Metroid: Samus Returns. Y esto podría garantizar una nueva época dorada protagonizada por la cazarrecompensas más famosa e influyente del medio interactivo: esperemos que Metroid Prime 4 confirme dichas apreciaciones.

Metroid: Samus Returns ousa pouco, mas é justamente o que todos nós queríamos. A nova aventura 2D da Samus tem todas as características legais da série: mapas complexos para explorar, habilidades para adquirir e metroids para destruir.

Despite the flaws with its pacing, Metroid: Samus Returns feels like true classic reborn- with all the polish expected of a modern release and stands proudly among the other fantastic 2D entries to the series.

Metroid Samus Returns es un trabajo de reconstrucción ejemplar. Mantiene el esqueleto del clásico de Game Boy, con un tremendo respeto por las claves de la licencia, pero añadiendo novedades con precisión de cirujano para erigir un videojuego nuevo, con excelentes valores de producción. Ciertos elementos se hacen repetitivos como consecuencia de mantener el ADN intacto, pero lo mejor es que Mercury Steam ha demostrado gran talento en una producción que seguro le abre muchas puertas.

El trabajo de MercurySteam con este Samus Returns ha sido tremendamente positivo. Se percibe un mimo y un cariño ya no únicamente hacia la saga sino hacia el género y el propio título. Un afán de adaptarlo a los tiempos que corren aunque ello suponga eliminar parte de su ADN sin que esto afecte a la experiencia del jugador. Un arcade plataformero puro y duro que encaja a la perfección en la portátil de Nintendo, del que disfrutaréis mientras jugáis y pensaréis en el mientras no lo hacéis. No hay que olvidar que juegos como este marcaron una época y erigieron un género aún presente en nuestros días.

Parte un po’ in sordina, cresce lentamente e si ritrova alla fine grande, grosso e spettacolare: questo è Metroid Samus Returns. Il ritorno un po’ scontato e non particolarmente innovativo (anzi) che comunque tutti gli appassionati non possono lasciarsi sfuggire per niente al mondo. L’operazione remake ha funzionato meglio che ai tempi dell’acqua cheta di Zero Mission (era il 2004), anche se la direzione artistica lascia il tempo che trova (ma le animazioni sono ottime) e se l’esplorazione è vagamente annacquata rispetto al passato. Ma, al netto delle dita scricchiolanti, Samus Returns è comunque un gran bel giocare.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a great return to form after the Federation Forces debacle and should make fans of the series happy with the final product. Aside from a few presentation hiccups and difficulty curve, the improved visuals and added content make for a solid entry in the Metroid universe. We have been waiting for Samus to return for a little while now, but the wait has been worth it.

Metroid II: Samus Returns è senza dubbio uno dei giochi più interessati nell'attuale panorama del 3DS. Da tempo si sentiva il bisogno di un titolo del genere su questa piattaforma e per fortuna il capostipite è arrivato a reclamare il suo trono. Di fronte a voi ci sono un sacco di ore di esplorazione, piccoli rompicapi e scontri che metteranno alla prova i vostri riflessi. Un ottimo antipasto per farsi venire ancora più fame in attesa del prossimo capitolo per Switch.

Tantissimo poteva andare storto, considerando che Metroid era un franchise dormiente da troppi anni, che l'ultimo episodio con visuale laterale aveva diviso pubblico e critica e che Mercury Steam, che pure è uno sviluppatore di talento, stava lavorando anche a Raiders of the Broken Planet. 

E invece, contro ogni previsione, Samus Returns rappresenta uno dei migliori metroidvania disponibili per 3DS, e rende giustizia ad un brand che Nintendo sembra voler rilanciare alla grande, con nostro sommo gaudio. 

Un eccellente level design, un paio di aggiunte brillanti al titolo del '92 ed una struttura di gioco invecchiata benissimo sono solo alcuni degli ingredienti alla base dell'ottima qualità del prodotto finale. 

Da qui Nintendo dovrà ripartire per garantire un futuro florido alle avventura bidimensionali della cacciatrice di taglie più sexy del pianeta.

It really is good to be back in a 2D Metroid game, and while the aesthetic isn’t really attractive the core gameplay is as good as it has ever been. There will be many who aren’t happy about this, as this game’s existence brought about the end of AM2R, but MercurySteam’s effort deserves an audience built of Metroid fans and newcomers, after all, if you’re looking to get into a series then you can’t do much better than jumping in at the (near) beginning and this is an excellent way to spend your time while you wait for Metroid Prime 4.

While it’s been marketed as a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus for Game Boy, Metroid: Samus Returns is more of a much-needed reboot of the 2D Metroid games we know and love. It’s a safe, modern take on Super Metroid, one of the greatest games of all time. Aside from some repetitive boss fights and hand-cramping controls, it’s nearly everything I could ask for as a fan of old-school Metroids.

El 15 de septiembre podréis comprobar por vosotros mismos qué tal le han sentado los años y los cambios de país y equipo a este Metroid: Samus Returns, aunque apostamos a que no acabaréis decepcionados. Samus nunca defrauda.

Metroid Samus Returns es un golpe en la mesa, una lección que muestra por qué esta saga encabeza un género tan emblemático como el Metroidvania. Llegó sin hacer ruido, agazapado entre la sublime maleza que poblaba el Nintendo Spotlight del E3 2017. Por fin, cañón en mano y armadura enfudada, Samus ha vuelto.

Metroid: Samus Returns is another wonderful 3DS game that gives owners yet another reason to pick up their 3DS consoles, even with the Switch’s growing library. It looks great, plays great, and is as faithful to older Metroid games as you could ask for. All we can hope for now is that this is just the beginning of the 2D Metroid renaissance.

Metroid Samus Returns is a very good remaster of the original GameBoy game with a load of new features that make the game more user-friendly. We only wish the hard mode would have been included in the game, and not exclusive to amiibo owners.

MercurySteam takes no time at all proving it is the perfect fit for a series overdue a resurgence. Another studio may have recreated Metroid as it was, but the Castlevania veterans modernise the Nintendo franchise with new abilities, freer movement, quality animations and lush alien design brimming with mystery and the unknown.

If this remake was a test to see if there's life yet in the franchise, it passes with flying colours, only let down by a lack of the memorable boss encounters the series is known for. Maybe in a sequel the MercurySteam team could address this. They've certainly earned the right to try.

Non sapremo mai come Metroid: Samus Returns sarebbe potuto essere su Switch quindi non ci resta che goderci al meglio questa comunque meravigliosa uscita 3DS, che tra l'altro ci regala uno dei migliori 3D visti su questa portatile negli ultimi tempi. In attesa di capire quali meraviglie ci attendono in Metroid Prime 4 non possiamo che gridare a gran voce: Bentornata Samus, ora vedi di non sparire di nuovo!

Al diavolo i pregiudizi: Yoshio Sakamoto ci ha visto giusto coinvolgendo MercurySteam. Metroid: Samus Returns è un remake fatto bene, i cui difetti principali a livello di ripetitività sono da attribuire principalmente al titolo originale. Peccato per l’enfasi sulla counter durante i combattimenti, ma Metroid è fatto anche di esplorazione, e questo aspetto è realizzato molto bene con una serie di azzeccatissime aggiunte, teletrasporto in primis. Nel complesso un buon gioco; non ottimo, ma comunque degno dell’importante nome che porta.

Mercury Steam démontre un talent fou dans l'exercice du remake avec cette version méconnaissable de l'antique Metroid II : Samus Returns sorti il y a déjà un quart de siècle. La copie rendue n'a presque plus rien à voir avec l'original, et c'est tant mieux : la quantité d'armes, de gadgets et de situations librement rajoutée par le studio ibérique transcendent complètement l'expérience, et accoucheraient presque d'une toute nouvelle aventure. Presque. Car la structure et la narration héritées de la Game Boy finissent par rejaillir derrière cet admirable ravalement de façade. Dirigiste et corseté, cet épisode se révèle au premier abord bien plus sage et prévisible que les classiques 2D de la saga spatiale. Avec un objectif chiffré affiché d'emblée et un sublime feu d'artifice qui ne se déclenche que dans ses dernières heures, Metroid : Samus Returns s'avère un chouïa trop sage pour tutoyer les sommets d'excellence auxquels la belle Samus nous avait habitués.

Samus Returns is my favourite 2D Metroid game since Super Metroid, and feels the best to play of any of them, but it’s hard to evaluate on that front. A lot has changed since Metroid: Zero Mission was released in 2004, to the extent they’re not directly comparable, as it’s just been too long. In many ways this is the grand return we’ve been waiting for, a fantastic 2D Metroid that does most things right, but in others it’s a retread that’s throwing the 3DS a bone and aiming to appease long suffering fans, rather than dazzle them. Still, we’ve been asking for a glorious return of Samus and there’s no doubt she’s back.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a commendable re-imagining that has clearly been crafted with plenty of love and care by MercurySteam.

Metroid: Samus Returns é o Metroid que todos esperavam. Inovador mas fiel às suas origens, desponta numa aventura digna da sua herança. Com uma longevidade surpreendente e uma jogabilidade intuitiva, é uma proposta muito bem desenvolvida que vai agradar tanto a veteranos como a recém-chegados.

The whole package comes together to create another amazing 2D Metroid experience. Metroid: Samus Returns stands alongside Zero Hour and Fusion as another fantastic handheld entry for this almost always great series. When deciding whether or not Metroid: Samus Returns is worth checking out just think about these two things. There’s a reason that the Metroidvania genre is so popular these days, and there’s a reason why this series is featured in the genre’s name. While this isn’t Samus’ greatest adventure, it is still a very good one.

It sounds cliché, but Metroid: Samus Returns feels like a return to form for the franchise. It has all the key characteristics that you’d expect from a Metroid game – level design crafted to encourage exploration and discovery, a positive characterization of Samus, and a general flow to it like no other game in the franchise. Visually, the game is a feast, if not slightly uninspired, but it takes great advantage of the 3DS hardware to really sell the idea of an abandoned planet that nature has taken back.

El juego tiene un buen ritmo, adquieres habilidades rápido y al mismo tiempo sube la dificultad cuando empiezas a sentirte poderoso, como debe ser. Samus ha vuelto cuando más necesitaban los fans su presencia, y lo ha hecho de la mejor forma posible: un clásico, una experiencia pura Metroid con unos cuantos añadidos modernos bien encajados para que se juegue como hoy en día, mejor que nunca. Un título con bastante más calidad que los últimos intentos nipón y americano, que ha servido para que MercurySteam demuestre su talento, su amor y su respeto por esta serie al tratar por igual a los seguidores de siempre y a los jugadores noveles. Nos gustaría volver a ver más juegos de acción lateral en sus manos o, por qué no, ese misterioso Metroid Prime 4.

Misión cumplida: revolucionando lo justo (una revolución de remake: más templada, más complaciente, pero aprovechando para pulir y refinar y expandir algunas ideas), el estudio ha dado forma a un juego en el que se reconoce lo básico de Metroid II si miras con los ojos entrecerrados, pero que no se limita a replicar lo que se hizo en 1991 cambiando las limitaciones de Game Boy por las de 3DS, diferentes aun siendo de la misma familia. No es un aperitivo para Metroid Prime 4 ni un apaño rápido: Samus ha vuelto, y ha vuelto de verdad. 

To be very clear, I grew up playing Super Metroid, and never had the patience for the NES installment. In the middle of last year, I played AM2R and was convinced that it was the perfect remake of a game I had never played.

Même si Nintendo s'attaque là à un titre culte, difficile de ne pas s'extasier sur ce Metroid : Samus Returns. Au-delà d'un simple lifting graphique, ce remake de Metroid II : Return of Samus a de bonnes chances de convaincre un maximum de joueurs, avec une aventure proposant une certaine difficulté, un level-design au poil mais également des nouveautés venant dynamiser et rajeunir le gameplay, comme une map, un contre ou encore une visée plus pratique. Si l'on n'échappe pas à une certaine répétitivité ainsi qu'à un côté parfois un peu trop linéaire, les nombreuses améliorations à débloquer permettent de renouveler suffisamment l'aventure pour pousser à aller toujours plus loin. Bref, si vous aimez la licence ou simplement ce genre de titres, n'hésitez pas.

Complaints aside, there's no denying that Metroid: Samus Returns is an addictive and rewarding remake of a classic game. It's certainly not as good as other 2D entries in the series but what's here is sure to tide fans over until the next Metroid releases.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a fairly competent game completely neutered by the device it’s locked to and lazy design choices. While enjoyable, the game is extremely short and repetitive for the $40 price tag, while feeling dated right out the box. By the time of its completion you will feel like a 14 year old boy who just discovered the internet. Quickly finishing with a hand cramp while closing out what you were looking at until you get that “itch” again.

Samus Returns is not the most faithful remake in history, but taken on its own terms it’s a fun shooter with just enough Metroid flavour to keep fans happy
