On the surface, War Times is really nothing more than a collection of the greatest aspects of RTSes past. Everything from developmental progression down to how a user-created grouping is brought to center-screen on the map has roots in some other notable game. But innovation was not the aim here. While not visually stunning, the graphics ride the side car along the much stronger structural foundation of War Times. In going the trodden path of those before it, Legend Studios has not faltered in implementing and combining gameplay, interface, and real-time strategy entertainment to the backdrop of one of the most famous wartime struggles in history. If you like RTSes, and War Times looks even remotely interesting, pick it up. You simply can’t lose.

Overall I found the game quite enjoyable. As I played more I found the game becoming easier, but the manual functions of movement and the never-ending clicking a bit tedious. Each new scenario presented a different challenge and with the ability to play as different nations the replay factor was pretty high. I was quite impressed by the way the game dragged me in for just one more scenario. Seldom have I played a game where I died so much, yet still wanted to play more. I give the game an absolute thumbs up and highly recommend it for the WWII era gamer. What it lacks in overall strategy appeal it makes up for in fast playability. It is perhaps a bit lacking for the hardcore RTS player, but it has potential to be a great game with use of the map editor and some online players. The learning curve is a bit higher than many games if you’re new to the RTS world, but patience is rewarded with an outstanding game.

War Times does have moments where it could seemingly shape up as a good WW2 RTS, but most of the time the gameplay never crests much higher than mediocre. Realism nuts won’t like how relatively simplistic the combat and base building is, but armchair generals will appreciate how easy the game is to pick up and play without having to concentrate in large amounts of battlefield data. The play control could be a little tighter, there are a few bugs to stomp and kinks to oil, and the ability to pitch the camera a bit more would be a welcome change, but at its core War Times is a relatively entertaining game in the same vein as classics such as Command & Conquer: Red Alert, though not nearly as high quality. If you find games like Blitzkrieg to be overly complex you might want to check out War Times, whether bought new at the bargain price of $30 or from the pre-owned bin later on, as while it does involve the same fighting men and machines as the former it doesn’t have as steep a learning curve and can be entertaining despite is bugs and quirks.

Given a choice between the two top contenders in the World War II genre, I would have to choose Desert Rats over War Times. War Times is a fun, playable and respectable effort at capturing the feel of World War II combat, but its magnificent cutscenes and (initially) superb soundtrack end up promising an experience that the blocky graphics, uninspired landscapes and poor sound effects can't make good on. Fans of WWII real time strategy games will ultimately enjoy the experience War Times offers, but casual RTS players should probably try before they buy.

An all-right RTS game but compared to current RTS games it's lacking.

Although the some of the features show promise, War Times ends up being just another run-of-the-mill RTS.

Diehard RTS gamers, however, will find War Times doesn't keep pace with the depth and appeal of stalwarts like "Age of Mythology" or "Rise of Nations."

War Times is not a bad RTS. However, when you consider that other games are available that better do what War Times tries to do, it is hard to justify purchasing.

ltimately, War Times is a pedestrian real-time strategy game that barely manages to offer up the basic mechanics that define the genre. Add its failure to deliver the spirit we'd expect from the setting and there's very little to separate War Times from dozens of other all-too-predictable real-time strategy games. It feels too much like generic RTS mechanic #3 married to generic RTS setting #4 with little thought put into innovating or even integrating the two.
If you're looking for serious WWII tactical action, it's still hard to beat the Combat Mission series...at least in multiplayer. Still, the format of those games isn't always appealing to the RTS fan. Those players may find games like Blitzkrieg or Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps to be more enjoyable. They'll also find that the Patton campaign in Empires: Dawn of the Modern World offers much more personality and polish.

A fairly conventional real-time strategy game that covers a lot of ground that we've seen in better World War II-based games.

It's unfortunate that the same level of fun didn't make it into the single-player campaign.

With a poor presentation and poor gameplay, War Times feels like an overpriced piece of budgetware that's destined to languish in bargain bins until its desiccated corpse turns to powder and is blown from our memory.

War Times struggles along and ultimately becomes a casualty of its own conflicts. The shallow tech tree, paucity of unit types, ineffective pathfinding and tedious gameplay make enjoying it a losing fight.

The AI follows a scripted battle plan that remains virtually unchanged regardless of what strategies you implement against them. To that end the game doesn't have much of a real-time feel.
