Vanishing Grace did surprise us in what the game offered, and although it comes with bad points, these are balanced out with good points. With a great narrative for the story, puzzles that made sure it did not break up that narrative and doing everything it needed to to work well in VR. However, it did leave us with wanting puzzles that were a little more difficult, a better variation of puzzles and a bit more meat on the bones of the story. With what the game does in most areas, it’s hard not to find similarities to Firewatch – but, it’s a great game to be compared to.

Vanishing Grace is an adventure puzzle game about a man searching the apocalypse to find his dear old friend. Or maybe it’s a game about a young man running from a troubled relationship and the responsibilities that come with it. Either way, it’s a good story that is over too soon but is ultimately a trip worth taking.

An underwhelming variety of gameplay elements and narrative that doesn't perfectly conclude shouldn't distract from the fact that this is a beautifully executed VR Narrative experience. From a four-man development team, Vanishing Grace is an achievement. It's well worth a look, especially if you're looking for a compelling narrative wrapped up inside an enjoyable VR experience.

I wish Vanishing Grace had the time to flesh out its story and design to the same level as its intoxicating central set, but it nevertheless remains a thoughtful and touching adventure I was glad I undertook. Warm VR visuals and a winning sense of space make this a great destination to breathe in even if selective interaction feels restrictive and the ride is over before you can get too comfortable. It’s a bit of a Firewatch-lite, then, but a decent starting point for a promising new developer.

Vanishing Grace comes across as one of those VR titles which seemed great in the demo, seeing a small snippet, yet on inspection of the entire experience, you wonder where the rest went. Even with its short runtime Monte Perdido Studio has showcased some wonderful talent like its ability to create a story-driven experience that you enjoy being a part of. However, its linear structure does mean that Vanishing Grace is a one and done VR title, lacking Myst’s or even Mare’s ability to make you step back in.

A decent narrative-puzzler with some elements that shine, Vanishing Grace spoils its interesting story and premise with barren locations and formulaic gameplay.

Vanishing Grace is a perfect example of a title that takes a promising idea and does the bare minimum with it. It undervalues the better elements it offers and instead goes heavy on overly simple puzzles. It relies on a storyline that makes you want to stick your fingers in your ears and scream "lalalalalala" until all the characters stop talking.
