Castlevania: Lords of Shadow reinvigorates the franchise by borrowing from other games, adding its own wonderful magic system, and ratcheting up the epic factor to ludicrous degrees. It's huge in scope, length, and depth, and it's polished with obvious love and passion.

Though its imperfections are numerous, the overall build quality is such that all fade into insignificance in the face of masterful design – there’s just something about Mercurysteam’s collaboration with Kojima Productions that will keep you coming back for more, even after the Lords of Shadow are no more. Whether or not it constitutes a good Castlevania game will depend very much on what your expectations are. But taken on its own merits, there’s far less question over Lords Of Shadow’s credentials – it’s as brilliant as it is long. That’s 20 hours brilliant, then. Whatever that means.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a game that finds itself in an interesting position. It attempts to simultaneously bring Konami's storied vampire-killing series successfully into the third dimension - where previous attempts have largely failed - and to reboot the increasingly convoluted story of the Belmont clan and their feud with Dracula. As with all reboots, fans of the series have been worried that Lords of Shadow might lose a bit of what makes Castlevania feel like Castlevania in its haste to take notes from games like God of War. Others claim that change is a good thing, and that this is merely a harkening back to Castlevania's true action-game roots.

When all is said and done, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has much in common with the Super NES version of Dracula-X that was released in the U.S. Lords of Shadow is a solid action game that incorporates some of the best moments from across the genre, but it's not the next great Castlevania game. If you can overlook the rough spots, there's an enjoyable romp here, but this reboot strays a bit too far from the core elements of the franchise and borrows too much from other titles to be the standard bearer for the mantle.

he overall feeling I had with Lords of Shadow is that it's a very good game that could have been spectacular. If the level of care and polish had spread to all aspects of the game, and perhaps if certain sections had been left on the cutting room floor, it would've been released as a tighter, more rounded package that would be able to compete with the greats in its field. As it is now, it's still very easy to recommend and love the game. Iit's just not always possible to look past its issues, all of which act as minor disappointments or annoyances rather than genuinely off-putting aspects. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a solid start for the franchise's reboot and while it's far from perfect, it's easy to see where MercurySteam could take a sequel in order to achieve true greatness.

Entertaining highs and frustrating lows punctuate a Castlevania game that--in an effort to redefine the series--loses its identity.

In the end, I'd rather play a more traditional 2D Castlevania game, but there is no denying that this is a beautiful and enjoyable change of pace.

Lords of Darkness is a solid action game that just gets better the farther in you go, loaded with content and high production values despite its barely-passable framerate, but it doesn't do much to earn the Castlevania name.

Altogether, the game spins an interesting tale, and though it might borrow some ideas a little heavily from certain other games, it implements them well.

Indeed it’s the unifying quality of Castlevania: Lord of Shadows’ presentation that manages to elevate it somewhere above the sum of its pilfered parts and allows it stand on its own two feet as a game of some note.

It’s rare to criticise a game for being too long, but some judicious editing could have turned this long-needed reboot into a real God Of War beater.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was the last of its kind and while it isn’t perfect, it is one of the better examples of its kind from a console generation that was hopelessly creatively bankrupt.

It's simply a second-rate title that might have been good a decade ago, but doesn't need to exist in this day and age.
